It's a little off-topic, but I'm sort of hard-pressed to find the "proper" way to implement a favicon.
I have no desire to bring Windows into this, and I don't think there's any reason to use Windows formats on the internet unless absolutely necessary, so I'd really like to use a png, which I understand can be done.
Do I actually need to insert any HTML into my documents to do this, or is it just enough to stick the file "favicon.png" somewhere on my server?
thanks to anybody who can help me clear this up! :)

Well, the Windows format
is the proper way of implementing a favicon. Fortunatelly for a MacGeek™ such as yourself, you can use
Iconographer to design your favicon - Iconographer support the .ico format quite well!
If you have a favicon.ico in your root directory, you don't have to modify your documents. However, you
can specify a favicon for an HTML document like this:
CODE
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="/images/cool.ico">

I made my favicon (16px by 16px) in Photoshop, and just saved it as a .bmp and then renamed it to .ico when I uploaded it
there's more info at
webmonkey, and I'd guess they'd tell you not to just rename a bmp, but it seems to work. LOL!

I tried renaming a .bmp to .ico, but it's not showing up in Camino. If this only works for IE, then it's definitely not the proper way. I'd check IE, but I deleted it long ago. anybody want to try? http://www.theblankeffect.com

Hey, cool! I wasn't even aware of this! This day's worth of postings and now the little favicon have finally convinced me to switch browsers. Safari it is, from now on.
And, freshyill, yours shows up in Safari alone. Not in IE for either windows or mac, and not in mozilla.
But, you're one browser ahead of me ...

Your icon is working in Mozilla 1.3 for windows

Sometimes, IE won't show it until you've bookmarked a site... so maybe other browsers are like that too.

oscarf, if you're using the latest official beta of safari, you have no idea what you're missing. b62 is awesome...it has tabs. b64 seemed to improve the tabs, but it had *major* problems with stylesheets, for me at least. When Camino .7 came out, I just went back to that. It's been working pretty well for me, but Safari is faster on my machines. I'm sure that I'll switch to Safari once the time is right, which may be as soon as the next release.

Yes, so I've heard! I look forward to the next Safari release. Also, I'd forgotten I'd downloaded Camino, so I just fired it up - very fast too.
Well, I still can't get any favicon (of mine) to show up anywhere though (I can get it to go from generic to blank ;) ). But, it was pretty late when I was half-reading the documentation ... probably made a bad icon.

Until today I never knew what these little images were called--Thanks Kristine.
I can get it to display in [on my PowerBook] Camino and Mozilla, but not in my beloved Safari. The file is saved as a .ico. How do I get Safari to display my ico? I've restarted Safari and flushed the history and cache.
Here is
my site.Suggestions?
Thanks,
Michael

Shows up fine in Safari v73.
Might try clearing your cache if it isn't showing up on your end.

Hmm. I'm running Safari v73 as well and it doesn't show, even after clearing cache. But at least it does show up in Safari. Interesting.
Thanks,
Michael

You could try ditching your preferences files and stuff. I remember I changed my favicon and had a heck of a time getting it to change in Safari, and I don't remember how I did it, but it was along the lines of getting rid of external files, but that was also before Safari had a Clear Cache menu item.
Anyway, your problem is definitely a local one, so that's good at least.
