Full Version: Looking For A Working Wordpress To Mt Exporter
Movable Type Community Forum > Installing and Upgrading > Importing and Exporting

Greets:

I am in the process of moving my sites over from WordPress Multiuser to a temp install of WordPress and then into MT. I found the Blog to Wiki importer that's been mentioned a couple of times here in the forums and tried to use that but I quickly discovered that it only exports out a single category per post. Gotta admit that that's probably not going to work for me. smile.gif

My Google search found that importer and another but the second one was for an earlier version of wordpress and is noted that it no longer works for the 2.x install of WordPress.

I'm about ready to start copying and pasting. smile.gif

Suggestions of either a fix for the Wiki importer if one is known or another plugin that may handle multiple catgeories?

Regards and thanks for your time,

I have a script that reads WordPress post information directly from the database and outputs the MT importing format. Information here:

http://subtlecoolness.com/2006/05/14/movablepress/

It even handles multiple categories. It isn't a plugin, just a simple script: you put your database information in and upload it to some place on your server, then navigate to it in a browser.

If it doesn't support something you need, please let me know. I would love to make it more robust and helpful.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a try.

edit: Works fine but it doesn't import into MT 3.35, It runs but doesn't find the posts. sad.gif

Gone to work on it.

Hopefully I don't commit any blunders by responding to my own posts but I hardcoded in an Authors line and that worked fine for me. Since it was just me as the author, I can live with that.

thanks again,

OK, now I am having problems with it. Worked fine on one site without issue but now I'm getting the dreaded "All data imported successfully!" notice along with a nearly empty box. Here's the export file:

http://drmikessteakdinner.com/dmsdexport4.txt

I believe that one was saved as a UTF-8 file although it may be ANSI. (I've done it about a dozen times now in the last hour or so.) It's cut down from the larger exported file as it was about 3 megs and the exporter balked as it was too large.

Anyone see any issue in teh file?

thanks,

I got it working. Instead of trying to upload it via the webinterface, I ftp'ed it into the import subdirectory and imported it via that method.

It's great that you got it working Mike. Just as a heads up, Movable Type 4.0 comes with a Wordpress importer that will import all your entries, comments, pings (and I believe uploaded assets etc.) using Wordpress' XML export format.

P.S. Welcome to Movable Type smile.gif

heh heh. Pity it's not working for me though:

http://forums.sixapart.com/index.php?showtopic=63047

The end of the import output:

Saving entry ('Fan To Sue Now-Suspended NBA Star Who Rushed Stands')...ok (ID )
Saving entry ('My Daria Work')...ok (ID )
Saving entry ('ZDNet Stumbles Across Secret Google Service?')...ok (ID )
Saving entry ('Google vs. the DOJ - Part 2')...ok (ID )
All data imported successfully!

But nothing is showing up in the Manage -> Entries page nor within the db.

Hmm, just noticed that in those lines up there, there's no ID number in there. I would imagine that there should be.

Yes? No?

Sorry for the newbie question but I do have a wordpress blog here http://www.keralpatel.com I already got the database export import link from above, but I am also using the %postname% tag in the wordpress will moveable type be able to handle taht too. I also have meta tags and title plugings installed. Would it be easy for me to move to this blogging script. I do have web development experience and I can do it this or that way but if there are already some solutions out there then I would really appreciate some links to those resources.

Thanks.

At first I wanted to try about 3.35 but I couldn't import my Wordpress export file. What I did was on MT4.0 I imported and then exported as a MT file to be imported on 3.35.

I decided to run with 4.0 to help out with beta and feedback for new ideas they can still add into it to make it better. I thought I could post an idea if you had the time do have both 3.35 and 4.0

Could I get a forum admin to kill that link to the dmsdexport4.txt file please?

Thanks,
