Full Version: Help - Upgrading From 3.2 To 4.0 And Switching Hosts

I'm a MT novice who is currently hosted at Yahoo with MT 3.2. I'll be switching hosts and want to draw up a plan to migrate my site over to the new host that will be running MT 4. What's the best way to approach this?

- How do I move the database content over to the new host?
- Can I just export the entries from the database hosted at Yahoo and import them into the database on the new hosting provider?
- After the content is imported into the new database, is there anything I need to do on MT 4?

I want to keep all my entries and their prior published dates and URL's. Is this possible? I'm so confused so please excuse my lack of knowledge. sad.gif

Hi there,

It is likely that you will keep the URLs also if you just export and import the entries on the new server under MT 4 or whatever version

However, in certain cases whereby your articles URLs where based on basenames not on the entry title and those basenames have even been sometimes edited manually or trncated to a certain number of characters you could get issues with URLs not remaining the same after the export - import

In such circumstances you could try to apply the same URL pattern algorithm on the new server or just export the mysql database from Yahoo Small Business hosting and import it on the new server. After importing the mysql database you can point movable type to it and the upgrade will work by itself

Be aware that depending on your very templates sometimes some items won't work (tags going obsolete or yahoo-based tags)

It is always a good idea to hire a professional for this job as sometimes you get really get headaches unless you are experienced with this sort of stuff

If you need help ping me. Good luck
