Full Version: Can I have sub categories?

I have lots of categories.
I would like some of these categories to be inside other categories, like this:
------
category 1
 sub category 1
 sub category 2

category 2
 sub category 1
 sub category 2
------

I've searched for ages and found nothing.. I must be missing something... surely.

If this functionality exists, I have never seen it.  It's one of the things a lot of people keep talking about, but I do not believe it's part of the current offering.

This post mentions something similar.

You may be able to hack something up using multiple categories, but subcategories are not currently built in to MT.  They are on the feature request list, though! smile.gif

Well I'm quite stunned!
That post linked in the second thread is dating back to last July, and it's still only on the features request list???
Yet they implemented a completely useless textile plug-in in the last release?
Is everybody stoned??  :p

Given the number of times people have asked for more control over text formatting (for example, the Convert Breaks option is one of much consternation; plenty of people have lobbied for more control of that feature), I certainly do not agree that the textile plugin option is "completely useless".

There are good reasons why this feature was added to MT; don't be so quick to dismiss it just because it doesn't matter much to you. (I've yet to use it outside of testing purposes, but I still recognize its value.)

And have you noticed the length of the Requested Features List? (BTW, those are just the things I saw the most frequently; there were a lot more I could have added, but I had to end the madness somewhere!  tongue.gif ) With a list that long, there's just no way everything can be of equal priority.

I've tried the textile plug-in girlie, and all I can see is that it involves learning yet another way to code.
I don't understand what's wrong with plain old list and link tags..
But anyway, that wasn't really my point!!!!
I would have thought that categories inside categories would add alot more functionality to MT than the textile plug-in.
Clearly, I'm the only one who thinks so......sigh

There are many people who've requested subcategories; I'm not saying it wouldn't be a valuable feature. But the opinions of what features would be more useful than others are as varied as the number of users. For every new feature that's added, there are people who are tickled pink, and people who think something else should have taken precedence.

You just can't please everyone, and preserve your sanity at the same time.  ;)

I understand that - but isn't there even some kind of hack I can perform to simulate sub categories?huh.gif
*bangs head against wall*

I don't really want to have to set up a squillion blogs just for the sake of a few categories  ???

You should be able to simulate sub-categories using the FilterCategories plugin (which, BTW, I love, love, love...)

Yes, your templates will be more complex, but then you don't edit these on a daily basis...

Well I don't think it will .. having just looked at it I can't see how I can set up any subcategories with it. But thanks anyway.

No, you can't use it to "set up" sub categories, but you can use it to "simulate" them.  In the MT editor, you would be dealing with top-level categories, but in you templates you could present them visually as sub categories.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some features are easier to implement than others. Also, some features may be too much for the ordinary user and are best suited for power users. I know a number of MT bloggers who don't use categories at all  :0  Ben and Mena may be saving subcategories for MT Pro *crosses fingers*

Another suggestion I've seen to simulate sub-categories is to create a "meta-blog" whose templates make extensive use of the OtherBlog plugin to pull in entries and information from other blogs on the system. These blogs are treated as "categories" in the meta-blog and the blogs themselves have categories that are treated as sub-categories of the meta-blog.

Of course, this would be easiest to implement from scratch rather than trying to convert from an existing blog.
