I don't even know if this is possible, but I'd imagine that if anyone can help, it woud be the folks here.  I've recently skinned my site, and I would like to provide a choice that's friendly to older browsers (like Brenna's 2-column layout).  That first part I can do.

Here's what I don't know - is it possible to set things up in such a way that if my site detects someone using an older browser, it will default to the "friendly skin?"  I suspect there might be a way, because I know some sites provide alternate stylesheets for older browsers - am I right?

Thanks!

This is possible.

Browser redirects are pretty common. Do a google search on "browser redirect" and you'll find lots of pre-made scripts and such.

Without using redirects, there are also CSS tricks that exploit bugs in the CSS implementations of various browsers--you can set things up so that certain browsers see certain styles, others see others (this gets into some weird CSS voodoo).

Setting up a NS4-friendly page, however, may be more work. NS4's CSS is so buggy and incomplete that you probably won't be able to make up an attractive CSS file: you'll need to make up an alternate template (or set of templates) that uses old-fashioned table-hack layout.
