I would like to sort my entries by category. Actually, I would like to have one category excluded from my main entry area and included somewhere else on the same page.

I followed the directions in the MT Manual but it only worked when I only included one cateogry. I tried to include about 6 categories and then my main entry space was blank.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Try OR instead of AND.
