Howdy all!  Quick question... I am looking to dump my current web hosting service since they can't seem to answer simple questions like:

"what is the path to mysql socket?" and,

"did you all ever find what the path is?... here is a copy of the  mt.cfg I mentioned!  Thanks!"  and...

they definitely don't respond to "hey, I have been with you guys for over three years and I have brought you six other domains to host and at least a dozen or so DNS registrations... can you help me?"

all the above are in relations to another thread I started in the MySQL forum

So now I am moving away from the comfort of Windows (I plead willing ignorance... I know that UNIX and Linux are better) and here I stand at a crossroads...

Lose ASP and other features?  Or go with UNIX and Linux since I can probably move around the shell faster?  Or should this marketing guy / very amatuer geek just stick with windows.

Oy vey.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

LINUX rules !!! Unix is okay too... biggrin.gif
you can get a mysql database in linux so you'll only be losing out on the asp functions...but you can always use php instead...you might wanna try directi webhosting...i've been using them for 2 years now and the longest their support staff took to reply was 45mins on a sunday at 4:30am...

Thank you for responding!  I was beginning to think no one had an opinion!  I will look into it, and thanks for the tip as well.

I happily run an MacOS X server from my house, so if I want to know a path, I can just go look.  If you've got the hardware (and for me, it was just sitting around), then there is something satisfying about doing it yourself.  I like to fool myself that it's a useful skill for my resume, as well.

However, if you'd rather find a host, you might want to consider blog-oriented hosts, like http://www.blogomania.com/
They not only know how to host, they know how to host blogs.

Linux. You can always run mod_ASP on the Apache server.

You can host your blog on any hosting provider...blogs don't need any special software to work...ALL webhosts offer Mysql and/or Perl:Berkely DB, PHP, etc...BlogOMania specifically targets Blogs by offering templates/skins...
