I'd like to have the calendar appear only on archive index pages - preferably so that you view a monthly archive index, and use the calendar as alternative navigation.

To do this I really need to get some links on the calendar in the form of back / forward one month buttons.

When the last or first monthly archive index is being displayed the appropriate button should be deactivated (so you can't get "into the future" or vice versa

)

Anyone know how?

That gives you little « and » as navigation links. You can substitute whatever you like.
