what are your:

local site path

I am having the exact same problem. I posted about it in installation problems, but it isn't an installation problem. I have come to the conclusion that for some reason MT isn't generating the pages. I have checked and rechecked, and then triple checked all the URL's and paths, and in fact, after I click "rebuild", then click "view site", it shows the directory where the pages should be showing. Which tells me it isn't generating any actual pages.

I have searched my webspace top to bottom to see if possibly it generated the pages somewhere else, but I found nothing. What else could be causing this?

EDIT: I noticed something else. When I click on "rebuild", and it says it is rebuilding, it is supposed to tell me when it is done, or will it just say it's rebuilding indefinitely? Because if it is supposed to tell me that it is done, then that isn't working right. It only tells me that it is rebuilding so and so, and just stays that way.

Are you running any software like ZoneAlarm or Norton Firewall?

(It should tell you when it's done, and give an option to close the window.)

I am using Norton Firewall on my local computer...didn't know that would have anything at all to do with what happens in my remote webspace?
faeriedreamer
I disabled Norton Security, and tried again, and still nothing. It will say it is rebuilding, but it never completes, no matter how long I leave it. I left it sitting for almost an hour, then came back and it still said it was rebuilding. I only have 2 entries, so it can't take that long. I also have DSL, so there is no reason that it would take an excessive amount of time for me to see changes.

I still don't know what Norton Security has to do with anything, lol, but I thought I'd give it a shot. It still didn't work. What needs to be changed/edited for me to get it to actually complete rebuilding the pages? I thought it might be a database problem or something, but I used phpMyAdmin to check out the database, and it appears everything is there and just as it should be. I have no idea sad.gif
girlie
Norton Firewall will interfere with the rebuild popups.
faeriedreamer
I don't have Norton set to *block* popups. That is not the problem. I see the little popup window that says "rebuilding so and so pages" just fine. However, it never stops rebuilding, it never tells me it's complete. It never creates the pages. It is NOT generating the pages. So this has nothing to do with Norton Security. It *still* didn't work even with Norton Security turned off. So it has nothing to do with the popups, because they popup just fine, I have no trouble seeing them.

Any other ideas?

Once you choose which type of archive to rebuild and click rebuild, what happens? Could it be possible that they aren't being generated because MT doesn't have the proper permissions (777) to generate files in a given directory?
faeriedreamer
I checked that, and the directory that is supposed to hold the weblog is 777, the archives directory is inside of that one and also 777. I don't know what to do. Maybe someone could look at it and see if they see some glaring mistake that I am just missing, lol. I changed the username and password back to Melody and Nelson. To access MT the url is

Thanks!

I just logged in and rebuilt your entire site.

Are Norton Security and Norton Firewall the same thing?

Something on your computer is keeping the rebuilds from finishing. On my PC, I had to add your site to ZoneAlarm and tell it to allow everything (mobile code, cookies, etc). in order for the popup rebuild windows to complete. I suggest you look more closely at the software you're running and the things it blocks.
faeriedreamer
Thank you SOOO much! I will look at it again, but it makes no sense to me that it would interfere. I already have everything in my domain on the allowed list. That's very frustrating! Yeah, Norton Security is the combination package of Norton Antivirus and Norton Firewall.

I wonder why it still wouldn't work when I disabled Norton Firewall...it confuses the heck out of me! In fact, in the bottom of the browser window while I look at the site, and at the management area it has a green checkmark and says "trusted sites". Go figure, lol. I appreciate it, you have been a really great help! I will research everything in my computer and figure out why it's doing that to me.

Thanks LOTS!! biggrin.gif

One more question...could the problem have anything to do with security updates in Windows? I know that I lost the ability to see chromeless popups, and alot of other little features went away with some of the Windows updates that I have gotten. Could that be the problem at all?

EDIT: I have isolated the problem. I know for a fact now that it is my windows updates sad.gif . My boyfriend and I have our computers networked, and we both use the exact same Norton Security settings (I know because I set them both up and keep them the same). I just went to his computer and attempted a rebuild, and it worked no problem. The only difference between his and mine is that I keep windows updated for security, and he doesn't. So now that I know what the problem is, what do I do? Will I have to reformat and reinstall windows to fix the problem? Or is MT going to be useless to me because of this? I can't use his computer every single time I want to update, edit templates, rebuild, etc. He would kill me, lol.

So would that be a bug in the program, that an up-to-date version of Windows and Internet Explorer is incompatible?
girlie
Hmm. I'm not sure. I guess we'd have to isolate what element of MT was being affected by the update.

You know, I'm starting to think I remember seeing something about this quite a while back. About Windows security affecting third party scripts. I just can't quite put my finger on what the issue was specifically. I'll try to see if I can manage to remember where this came up.
faeriedreamer
I had been thinking about reformatting and reinstalling windows lately anyway because of alot of undesireable side effects of the windows updates. I have windows XP, which comes with IE6, so it doesn't have the security leaks of 5.5 and IMO the updates are not necessary for me at home. Maybe if I was running a large business or something, but not for me at home. So that's what I did. I wiped my hard drive, reformatted, and reinstalled XP.

Now I have Norton Firewall, as well as Spybot Search and Destroy immunization against harmful scripts. And you know what? The problem all along was windows. It works like a dream now. So yeah, I wouldn't recommend someone trying to use MT if they have all of Microsoft's updates installed, because it will disable something when MT tries to rebuild. I doubt I will ever update windows again. To be perfectly honest I wish there were better alternatives to Windows!

I am SO excited! I just wanted to say thank you to you again, Girlie, because it is working great now! I even managed to edit the main index template, and now am going to start on the other templates...I am loving MT, and loving the support forum members' helpfulness even more!
