Superhero Journalandrea@superherodesigns.comSuddenly, all of my comments disappeared!
When you attempt to post a comment, it registers that one more comment is there, but you are unable to view them.
I have the setting "open" checked in my template.
Very strange, please help!

Do the comments appear in your MT interface, either under Recent Comments or on the Edit Entry screen?

Girlie,
thank you for your response!
The comments actually do not appear on the Edit entry screen or under recent comments.
The only indication of them is that the number of comments continues to increase on my web page under the post.
Have you heard of this?

Do you also receive email notification of the comments?
If so, that, combined with the comments being missing from the MT interface, would indicate database corruption.
If you export your entries, do you see the comments in the text file?

Girlie,
No, I don't get email notification of comments::
I just tried exporting the entries and they don't
show up in the text file either. (although all of the older comments before this problem occurred show up)
prognosis?

Same problem here at
CraigLinton.com. After trying to delete comments that were not showing up, I come up with this error when attempting to rebuild:
QUOTE
Building entry 'Nothing to post today, so that's why I'm posting' failed: Build error in template 'Individual Entry Archive': Error in <MTEntryIfAllowComments> tag: Error in <MTCommentDate> tag: You used an MTCommentDate tag without a date context set up.
with "close" and "go back" as my two options. Everything was working yesterday, and aside from another (missing) comment, nothing has changed that I know of.
Here's what happens when I try to delete the comment that didn't show up:

Andrea, if the comments are missing from the export as well, yes, I think the database is corrupted.
Craig, yours may be as well.
In this thread, date context errors, when combined with other symptoms, seem to also be an indicator.

to you both.

Hmmm. Craig - after re-reading your post, not sure now. Let me think some more....
MySQL or Berkeley??
craiglinton.com

Berkeley.
I was getting some other random errors (something about hashes when I was rebuilding, I think. Those errors have been replaced by the date error). Would spurrious MT errors be the cause of corruption, nuisance "hackers" (putting something into my comments to mess them up), or my web host?
Thanks for the quick help!

New error! When trying to manage my blog:
QUOTE
Can't use an undefined value as a SCALAR reference at /www/c/craiglinton/htdocs/moveabletype/lib/MT/ObjectDriver/DBM.pm line 373.
Looks like somebody is going to be reinstalling MT sometime soon!
Please tell me that not all is lost (it seems like I can salvage most of it, from what the other posts have said). I'll be off searching the forums for "reinstall."
Craig
Update: Heck, instead of adding a new post, I'll just add an update. It looks like my host is having some problems, which may or may not be related to this particular problem. We'll see what happens when they "fix" everything.

SCALAR errors are not a good sign at all. They are a pretty strong indicator of database corruption, but I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Well, here's what I did, in case someone runs into these errors.
I was not able to get into the management of my blog per se, but I could "create a new entry." From there I was able to choose to edit my entries from the side menu and delete the two latest entries, one on them including the malformed comment. I was then able to post a new entry and rebuild my site. Good cookin.
I still get the SCALAR error when I smack the "go" button at the top next to the drop down menu, but thankfully I can get around with the menu on the side.
So next I decided to link the templates that I have created, thus saving them for when I reinstall. Rebuild worked again.
I also exported my entries (albeit, sans the two ones I deleted) without any errors.
So the moral of the story: delete entries with the offending comments (not just the comments themselves), then backup. Now I am ready to reinstall.

Good job on the exports and backing up. Too often, users on Berkeley (unstable as it is) wind up having to reinstall with neither of those things.
If you can switch to MySQL at all, it's recommended that you do so.

Girlie,
thank you for all of your help with this!
I am still confused about what to try next
to fix mine... I'm not getting the error messages that Craig mentioned. (or any error messages at all)
I tried deleting the entries and reloading them which didn't work. When I attempt to post a comment, the preview works fine, but it doesn't upload properly.
Any suggestions?

girlie,
just as suddenly as the comments stopped working,
they started up again with my new post.
Mysterious but a happy thing.
thank you for your help!

I'm having a slightly different problem when viewing the comments with IE6. They're invisible!
If I click to another browser window or even another application window and come back to the comments window, then they appear!
I can also drag the I-beam cursor thru the text area where the comments should be and then they appear.
This doesn't happen with Mozilla.
Any ideas on what's causing this?

ahh, never mind.... I found the solution over in the
bug reports topic:

Had exactly this. Was Berkeley db corruption. Followed the instructions at
http://www.movabletype.org/docs/mtmanual_t...0movable%20type. Now I'm back up and going, minus a few comments.
Will be converting to MySQL as soon as I can.
