Hi everyone. I would like to design my own blog layout/background, but I really have no idea where to begin, I don't know what half of the stuff in the stylesheet and index templates are, or even where to find info on them. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome.
As a new user myself maybe I can start you off.

1st. Do you have any html editing software?

2nd. As far as I understand it you build your html, CSS, the way you normally would and include the MT tag/code where you want the data to go. For example you might want a centered table with borders to enclose your entry. So you create the table and then enter in the MT tag/code into that table and voila!

You can alter the default Stylesheet in MT or build your own from scratch. www.webmonkey.com has an intro to .css you might wanna look at. There are plenty of resources on the net.

Of course the degree you are familiar with the elements needed in construction the easier it will be to get what you want. I spent many a long day/night wondering why my layout wasn't looking the way I wanted it to until I learned the correct way to do it.

Goodluck! biggrin.gif

P.S. Always search the forums, girlie's site, and any other MT related information sites before posting a question about a this or that, or you might get a beating by the elders. tongue.gif

Ya, the same happens on the opera forums...

1. Yes, I have AceHTML 5

2. How do I make this table?

Gnimsh -- you can use your html editing software to make a layout, and then in the area where you normally would put your text, paste the MTEntries tags that you want to display.

I am not to familiar with AceHTMl. Do you have the free version? I do not think the free version will do a syntax check. I have a links page (Link-O-Rama) you can find at my current site which has links to free software you can use to build a web page. AceHTML I believe gives you the ability to insert a table as well as a preview window to see how it looks.

Try this table maker:

http://www.bagism.com/tablemaker/

or this tutorial:

http://www.engl.niu.edu/wac/httable.html

This is my current Blog at Diaryland:

http://thekey-eliah.diaryland.com

I constucted it knowing only minamal (at the time) knowledge of HTML. I started by looking at sites which had layouts I liked then I went to view->source in the I.E. toolbar and looked at the HTML code (however if the page had a link stylesheet then there is only so much you'll get on the source page). Best way to learn is to copy someone else's layout and then modify it to look the way you want. In the process you'll gain an understanding of how it all works. After I got the basic layout to my liking I looked around for scripts that would enhance the page (like a time of day javascript that will either show a sun or moon on my page).

I had dreamweaver as well which helped me check my layout in multiple browsers before publishing. It's a matter of going back and forth from the code to final output and making little tweaks here and there.

You can start by basic HTML move on to adding a stylesheet once you learn how CSS works.

Hope that helps.

Gnimsh: I'd advise you to learn a bit of HTML first. there are a lot of online tutorials out there, or like holiday said, learn from imitation. Make sure to ask permission from the owner of the site first, or better yet, use one of those free templates out there. This is how I started, too.

As for finding info on what the tags in the templates and stylesheets are for, the user manual is very helpful and well written.

good luck in designing your new layout! biggrin.gif
