OK a friend of mine has created a nice little layout here, but I have absolutely no idea how to make it MT compatible or whatever. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Make the whole thing an Index template - cut and paste it in, set your output file to index.html, and rebuild. Any page with MT tags needs to be processed by MT - you can have lots of index templates (that's just MT's name for "content that changes more frequently").
