Alright folks, I just got told my host lost my blog data and doesn't have anything to restore from. My latest backup is 5 months old.

Go back up your blog.

Now.

I feel your pain. sad.gif In your honor, I backed up all seven of the blogs on my installation - can anyone beat that? Do I hear eight?

um ... might I suggest another host? ohmy.gif

(but, I've backed up again too ... thanks!)

Well the good news is that my blog is saved, but the bad news is that getting it cost me $60 to get them to restore from the backup.

Turns out the mistake was on my side (not directly mine, but it wasn't the hosts fault).

$60 is steep but better than losing the months of my life journal.

So guys, I got lucky and it cost me - go back up. Please.

i feel your pain. the harddrive of the server i was on suffered a catastrophic failure a month ago and my host only had a month old backup. my most recent backup was more than six months old. luckily i was able to rebuild my entries through google's cache after hours of copying and pasting.

now i backup every few days or after a template change.

Blog is backed up. It had been 2 weeks since I last backed up. With nearly 200 entries I think I would cry if my server crashed.

Thanks for the good willed encouragement.. and I'm glad you got your blog data back, just sorry it cost you $60 to recover the data.

Holy cow, $60 for database recovery? That's a lot of money sad.gif You might wanna look around and see what other hosts do in regards to this... Especially since it was your hosts fault, it seems like an excessive expense, and something that they should be doing it as part of the service they provide.

Thanks for the reminder, though - I'm off to download backups of my whole site and the mysql databases, which I try to do weekly. smile.gif I know for a fact I didn't do it last week, though. LOL!

Well now I don't know where I stand. My dad was my intermediary since it's his account I store it on. They appear to not have done any restoring, so I'm going to call them and find out what the deal is.

Good lord, I am going to begin looking for a new host.

oh boy, do I wish I'd listened to this advice earlier.

My server tanked, first the MySQL installation and then the whole Mac OS X Server installation, without me having any entry exports elsewhere. I came upon this post looking for some way to allow MT to search the old static files. I see now that this is not gonna happen.

For the love of god, export regularly. MySQL isn't bulletproof, you know.

I dump my MySQL database once a week. Takes all of about 2 minutes (the server is right by my desk). And usually keep the 2 newest ones. You never know right?

What's the best way to backup a blog? Or is there a best way?

Check out Girlie's lastest tip: Create an Export Blog. I've implemented this recently, and it's fantastic. In combination with Brenna's Show Templates plugin, which I have creating a page full of templates for each of my millions of blogs, Configuration listings (another Girlie tip), and the a cron job or three to automate exports, zip and email the backup directory to me, I think I'm well covered! biggrin.gif

And if not, I've got Mulitple Blog Suite (from Ms Kristine) as well! smile.gif

Thank you for reminding me!

You wouldn't think I'd need it, because I lost 3 months worth of entries at the beginning of this year! I lost documentation of some of the first's in my life!

My motto: Save, and save often.

Thanks for the links!

How can we change the charset to UNICODE in .txt file?

Old topic but seems the place to ask.

I recently had a Windows 2000 server crash. I was running MT by using cygwin so it was a pretty standard install.

When I rebuilt, I used Gentoo Linux instead of windows. I have access to the old database files from a Windows backup. Is there a way to just open up this database and export the entries? I have entries back to July 1999 (I imported Blogger and some other items) so I would like to not have to start over.

Since I am on a different machine , I wasn't sure how to proceed. I guess I will play around until I figure it out unless I hear from someone.

TIA.

Chip
