I was running MT happily on Jaguar (MacOS X 10.2) with mysql (version unknown but about 12 months old). I upgraded to Panther (MacOS X 10.3) with mysql 4.0.14.
I imported an export file from one of the blogs and noticed that after a rebuild my monthly archive section on the sidebar looked like: September October September October September October.
I checked the edit entry list and the entries were pretty much randomly order. I tried edited the post times by hand - sometimes the individual entry would sort but more often there was no effect. I deleted all the entries and then cut and paste, setting the date on each entry by hand (and in order, oldest to youngest). After six entries it happened again and the 7th entry appears in the list between the 2nd and 3rd entries.
I tried editing the dates in the save file by hand but that caused error messages about the date format having to be in American format (which it was).
Using phpmyadmin, I checked that there was an index on the date column (there is).
I have searched the forums using various keywords but have found no solutions (yet).

I hate "me too" posts, but I'm having the same problem. I noticed it after moving to Panther and switching to MySQL.
Sorting the table by date using the MySQL client seems to have no effect on it.
Weird.

A search for "Panther" on the boards here found me a few threads that talk about this, including
this one, which talks about the higher version of perl that is used now.

Problem resolved. It is the version of mysql that is the source of the problem. I have sent a hint to macosxhints about solving it but the gist of it is:
1. Backup the mysql databases (in /var/mysql)
2. Install the current version of mysql (found via the entropy site)
3. Restore the data into /usr/local/mysql/data
4. Delete the MT entries (you want to keep the database structures but not the entries).
NOTE: You will get gazillions of errors and the datetime column in the posts will be full of rubbish.
5. Reimport your pre-panther blog data (you did back it up didn't you?)
Everything is back to normal. I did not need to reinstall the perl drivers, they just worked. As did MT and phpmyadmin.
There is no conflict with the Apple supplied version because it is (a) in a different directory and (b) uses a different startup flag in /etc/whatever. The standard mysql will turn the new version on and the old version off.
