Full Version: Posting to MT with the Treo 600 PDA

I just recently got a Treo 600, a nice PDA/phone/mobile internet appliance. I can take pictures with this thing, and I can view web pages. Perfect mobile blog updating tool, yeah?

Using Maryl's advice with AvantGo, I was able to post to my weblog, sort of. The entry appeared in my MT backend, but didn't update to the front page until someone commented on an old entry. Basically, it was saved on the server but it didn't seem to rebuild. The individual archive entry didn't appear until I had re-saved the file in MT from my desktop. Maybe there's a step I'm missing.

Besides that, AvantoGo is kinda top-heavy. I tried to run Azure, because the idea of a dedicated weblog posting app for my Treo appeals to me. The Azure source code is shared online, but the Java Virtual Machine it uses immediately crashes on my device.

Ideally, I'd like to see something that can pull a picture from my phone cam archives and associate it with an entry. Not that the photos on the Treo are all that great. How about just a Palm-based MT integrated solution for always-on devices?

Anyone working on or want to work on a Palm-based MT posting application?

Have you looked at KABLOG? Just serach google.

I found Kablog - thanks for the link. It seems like the perfect tool, save that it doesn't support photo uploads for the Palm platform.

But when I try to run it, it seems to have the same problems that Azure has - it uses a Java virtual machine which crashes my Treo 600. From the looks of this thread on TreoCentral, none of the available Palm-compatible Java Virtual Machines will work with the Treo 600.

That's a bummer! So I guess I'm stuck with AvantGo, until someone comes up with a non-Java-requiring Palm posting app, or until a T6 compatible virtual machine emerges. But keep suggesting software - I'll try them all!

So I've fooled around with the Treo's Blazer web browser, and it does a decent job of rendering the MT entry screens. But it seems to truncate entries longer than just a few sentences, restricting mo-bloggers to haiku and preventing editing of other entries.

And sadly, the "Upload File" tool doesn't work, so no images from the Treo into my MT weblog. I guess I'll have to use my TypePad account, emailing images to myself there, and then pulling them on to my other weblog somehow.

Still it's not ideal - what I'd like is the chance to post long or short to my Movable Type weblog, and upload images to go with my posts. From my Treo 600. So let me know if you have any other ideas, or you hear of any other apps.

Not a perfect solution, but maybe you culd use Textamerica's mobloggin service? You just email the photo to your Textamerica account and its published on your TA Blog. Its quick and simple. Simple enough I swapped my Moblog from MT based to Textamerica. It was just quicker and hassle-free.

There was also an MT Plugin called MTMailEntry or something like that that would allow you to e-mail entries to an MT based blog. I don't think it got as far as Images, but you might research it. Might suffice for your needs.

Now for a cheap Pocket PC Plug. biggrin.gif
If you were using a Pocket PC instead of a PalmOS product, there is Pocket SharpMT. Its a Pocket PC Blogging client developed for MT from the ground up. It also works with any BloggerAPI compatible blog, but it was designed with MT in Mind. Works like a charm, even file uploads, and its FREE! Both the desktop and Pocket PC versions are.

There is Mobile MT
http://mobilemt.sourceforge.net/src/faq.php
for text only.

And it seems all of our problems would be solved if the T600 supported J2ME, but still wouldn't allow us to post photos.

Alan recommended that procmail be used to post photos, and while its a clunky solution, it seems to work for him.

An alternative is using MobileMT and some palm based ftp client that'd upload the pics (which i dont think are avaiable from the ftp client sadly) and manually link it.

There has GOT to be a better way ;p

Is it at all possible to tell MT to fetch information from textamerica?

I guess that would depend on whether or not Textamerica follows the BloggerAPI and allows for XML-RPC.

I've been following the referenced thread at Treo Central and thought it worth posting back here a solution referenced there, the excellent MfOP2 web tool by Kevin Cameron.

After registering your MT blog details, you just send an e-mail to mfop2@bastish.net, with or without picture attachment. MfOP logs into your blog, makes the post, and rebuilds your indexes.

For security purposes, I'd suggest creating a special mfop author that only has posting permissions. You might also want to setup a special e-mail account only for sending posts. I've completed a test post and it seems to work great.

PS: Do take a moment to read the help screen for the Template section when setting up your account. The system has a few special tags that are not obvious, but very useful.

I looked long and hard for a suitable mobile blogging tool that would let me post text and photos from my Treo 650. I finally found something that works great and wrote up a quick blog article detailing my trial and error.
