The URL of the commenter is being replaced (even when none is given) with URL of the comments box. Has anybody got some ideas why?. And why is this happening only to the ones using the default templates?.

What code are you using in the Comment Listing Template for the "Posted by" line? Post it here using the CODE button.

I'm not sure!
but even if they just put their email address it gets changed to mailto:person@place.com instead of just person@place.com ... weird

What happens when the Comment Author link is clicked?
The latest version of MT utilizes a redirect script for the author URLs, so the Comment URL would be what shows in the status bar of the window.
"Mailto:email@address.com" would be the correct format for an email link, BTW

oh wow the link was redirected, but I rely heavily on what the status bar says before I click a link so I never tried it
same with the email address, the status bar said mailto:person@place.com instead of just person@place.com so I assumed it was adding an extra mailto: like mailto:mailto:person@place.com
thanks for clearing that up for me!

Yep, this is happening on my blog and several others that have recently upgraded to 2.661 using a mySQL database, whereas it never did it in 2.64...

The redirect is a feature, not a bug

if you don't want the commenter's url redirected, install the
optional-redirect plugin.

by the way, what is the benefit of the redirect? does it have to do with slowing spammers?

Since many spammers post their URLs to increase their ranking on search engines such as Google, having a redirect in the middle defeats that motive.
