How can I change authors' names? Is there any downside to simply creating new names and having writers log in and post on those?
How will that affect MT?

have you tried editing the authors from the main MT admin page?

You can edit the author's names from the edit profile page. (Just make sure not to leave it blank accidentally.) After changing the name, rebuild to get the new name to display on your site.
