Hey what's up with this? I'm seeing more and more reports via trackbacks etc about MT users who have just upgraded getting notices from their hosting company indicating that their MT files (cgi mostly) have caused their server load to jump to over XXX and subsequently telling them to sort it out or the host will remove the offending files or similar such action (like additional charges etc).

Are there any MT developers checking this forum? It's an issue and there is something not right obviously or this would've come up earlier. Is there a MT downgrade package available? heh.

..and please don't bother replying if all you've got to say is 'find a better host' because that doesn't help anyone at all.

if you want better advice than "find a better host," provide more information.

what task is causing the server load to spike?

what files are cited by the hosting provider as the source of the server load problem?

what plugins, if any, are you using?

how many entries do you have?

what archive types are you using?

have you been comment/trackback crapflooded?

what is the url to your blog?

I haven't had a message from my host. As I said, it is what I'm reading in trackbacks on various blogs and even on one or two posts on this very forum.

From what I've seen, mt-comments.cgi has been the source of the increased server load. I have just sent off a support ticket to my host asking if there's been any noticable jump and any other details, if so I'll let you know if there is for me.

If you want some more info, maybe try to contact the person on this thread who apparently is being forced to switch hosts. There's a few others I've seen scattered somewhere in these forums just recently too who are in a similar situation since upgrading MT.

if you think the source of the server load problem is 2.661, downgrade.

the more you have mt do, the more server memory mt is going to use.

to reduce the load you can do the following: if you're using monthly, individual, and category archiving, stop using one or two of the three. use separate templates and php/ssi includes for the repetitive portions of your pages. turn off automatic rebuilding for templates that don't need to rebuilt every time an entry is posted.

downgrade ohmy.gif ..think I'll wait to hear back from my host first.

Yup I use php includes and have as few templates as possible integrated with MT already. No category archiving either btw.

I'd rather not downgrade obviously, and this post was really meant to highlight what appears to be an issue that has only arisen since people upgraded to 2.661. No worries, I guess it's the user's problem to resolve with their host one way or another, or else use a different blog utility.

cheers.

Yep. I just had to change hosting companies because my drain on the server resources shot sky-high after upgrading.

Part of the problem was a DDoS directed at my site by flooding the search script. I got that problem sorted out, but meanwhile my former hosting company says they're seeing similar problems with MT blogs now and they can't risk it. So I had the choice between increasing to a $40/mo plan or changing hosts. I chose the latter.

Btw, my former host specifically said that mt-comments.cgi and the other MT .cgi files were causing massive load problems.

weren't you with lunarpages? i used to be with them, but left after mercury had a meltdown and lost most of my blog. lunarpages is pretty good at giving customers lots of stuff. if lunarpages is balking at mt now, then the future of hosting mt powered blogs doesn't look very good.
ElectricVenom
Yep, and I loved LunarPages, too. I was on the Jupiter server and moved to Abante after noticing an increase in lag times. I'd assumed it was due to problems with Jupiter, but it turned out that my blog was the one causing it. (It started causing high server load on Abante right away, too.)

One thing I noticed - the load went down dramatically after upgrading to 2.661.

My provider (readysetconnect.com) have just shut down my blog as well due to server load-problems. They claim it's MT.cgi claiming over 39% CPU time. I have three blogs (two statics which are almost never rebuilt). I have everything sorted in to modules in MT, and I only used one php-include (on my main index). I have recently started installing a lot of plugins, some of which I can't get working. I suspect MT-mostvisited (I haven't removed it, but gave up trying to get it working). But I also have blogtimes and a few others installed. Anybody got an idea what causes this?

I was told to remove the offending script at once (recommended that I reinstall mt.cgi), but since they ALSO shut down FTP-access that is pretty much impossible. And it looks like support is in a different timezone than mine right now. Arrrrrgh. ohmy.gif

Oh and I'm running 2.661 of course, could this be attributed to the new throttling features perhaps?
