Full Version: I've lost the password to my blog
Movable Type Community Forum > Using Movable Type > Additional Features

First, I am using a very old version, 2.11 and I had planned to upgrade but now I'm stuck.

I recently upgrade PERL on my server and had to reinstall modules for DB_File, HTML-Template, etc. Now I'm ready to upgrade MoveableType but the system won't let me log in so I can update or recover any of the postings.

I've tried using the "Lost Password" recovery screen but it keeps telling me there is no such author/username despite the fact that its the username I've always used.

Is there any other way to recover the password or regain access to the system so I don't have to dump everything?

I'm having the same problem. Check out this thread and see if that works for you. I'm going to try it right now.

If you lose your password and/or user name this is what you do:

Use Mt-Medic.

If this doesn't work... If, by some odd occurance, you have no authors or blog (which happened to me and I think that's why Mt-Medic didn't work for me)... this is what you do:

1. Delete everything in db.
2. Run mt-load. (Yes, you've deleted this already, but find the one for your version and run it again... then delete it again)
3. Login in as Melody/Nelson. Create a new person, yadda yadda.

I found the answer! Yay! smile.gif

But doesn't this mean all the current activity is gone too?

Current activity? I'm not sure what you mean.

Deleting the db clears authors so it resets. If you're talking about your archives, they should stay unharmed in whatever folder you put them in.

I've tried the MT-Medic approach and it doesn't find any Blogs!

So I tried the MT-Load and get an error:
Tie 'E:\inetpub\loquendi\db\blog.db' failed: Invalid argument

Hmm. I'm not a pro, but I can only suggest a few things.

1. Are you using the correct mt-load. If it's an older version (ie 2.6), use that version --not 3!

2. Does "E:\inetpub\loquendi\db\blog.db" exist? If not, make it exist, or point the db where it's supposed to be.

3. Is this question asked in the right forum? Seems like a general-ish installation question. I'm surprised to not see it with the majority of other questions.

Uh... hi. The entries are stored in the database. It rebuilds the static files from the database.

If you wipe out your db you will lose your authors, sure; you'll also lose your templates, comments, trackbacks, posts, configuration settings.

I am not sure where this should have been posted so I put it here --- strickly a guess.

I used the mt-load from the original distribution TAR so I'm certain its the right one.

We recently upgraded PERL on this machine and that's when the 'administrative' functions stopped working --- the Blog works fine I just can't update it.

I suspect that the upgrade changed one or more modules that are sufficiently different that MT no longer 'likes' them.

Back to square one I guess.
