Hi, I've been using 2.661 for quite a while now with relatively few problems..

Yesterday, the only thing out of the ordinary I did was some tweaks to both the layout templates (for the index and individual archive template) and the CSS file.

It was working fine for a little while I suppose... sad.gif

Now when I try to rebuild the site (because new comments don't show on the main page either now), I get the following error:
CODE
Writing to '/home/pkethf2/public_html/pketh/index.xml.new' failed: Opening local file '/home/pkethf2/public_html/pketh/index.xml.new' failed: Permission denied

when I tried to make a new post, I also got a permissions error that went like this..
CODE
Saving entry failed: Tie 'db/trackback.db' failed: Permission denied

oh and if I try to add a new comment, it shows up but not before making this statement:
CODE
Rebuild failed: Writing to '/home/pkethf2/public_html/pketh/index.html.new' failed: Opening local file '/home/pkethf2/public_html/pketh/index.html.new' failed: Permission denied

Can anyone help me? I'm soo confused sad.gif

The first thing I'd suggest is to check your server and see what permissions your blog directories have. They should be 777, but from the errors you're receiving, that may have changed.

ok, i took your advice and changed all the permissions to 777 (which I had thought was unsafe or something). I was trying a new ftp client that day - maybe it somehow screwed some permissions i guess..

I also had to change a few MT database files (not all of them though) to 777

Everything's working fine now - thanks a lot!

I'm with dreamhost as well, (which is surprisingly popular around here), if you go back to your archive directory and do a CHMOD 777 to all the folders in there, that permission denied error will go away. You don't need to change permissions on the files inside the folders, just the folders.

Don't ask me why it works or what exactly causes this error to develop. I haven't changed the configuration for movable type in months and then this error appeared. At least, there are those out there who figured out how to get around it.

Thanks a bunch.

Adrian.
