My sister has a site hosted on Lunarpages. She recently started an MT blog. Without warning, LP disabled her MT installation this afternoon. Some searching led us to the Lunarpages forums where we learned that as of January, LP isn't allowing any new installations. We can't find anywhere on their site where this is mentioned or explained. There has just been a lot of speculation from users and a few comments by LP employees that give one of two reasons for denying MT:

1) mt-comments.cgi puts too much of a strain on the servers.
2) an ambiguous statement about how MT is too easily hacked and exploited.

Has anyone here run into this problem with Lunarpages or any other host? I've never heard of such a situation before.

I guess that Lunarpages wants people to do their research before you host with them...

I signed up with Lunarpages exactly one year ago and they have not sent any e-mails informing their customers that they would not be allowing MT installs anymore. Since I had an MT install before they put this policy into effect, and since my blog has many anti-spam measures in place, they left my installation alone. Because of their policy, I have switched hosts to Dreamhost. That's unfortunate because Lunarpages is a really good host with great support.

If she's still in her 30 day money back period and the MT blog is important, then I'd tell her to get her money back and switch hosts. If she does switch hosts, make sure you do your homework, as not all hosts let you install any version of MT.

Unfortunately, my sister isn't within her 30 day money back period. She's been hosting with them for over a year, but this is the first blog she's started. After some back and forth with them, they have re-enabled her mt.cgi but they didn't clarify if it was temporary or permanent.

This just happened at a really unfortunate time for her, since she's in Korea for a month and is using the blog to keep in touch with family and friends. MT being disabled, and having to either switch hosts or switch tools adds a lot of time and effort and takes away from her trip. Plus, it causes her down time in being able to update. :/
