Full Version: And you want me to pay $70?

I asked a question a week ago about a serious problem with attempting to use MySQL in favor of Berkeley. I have followed the sparse instructions to a tee, and come up with an error that, from my limited knowledge of MySQL, seems to be completely the fault of mt-db2sql.cgi.

I was then rudely redirected to an unrelated problem, telling me that I needed to finish my upgrade process first. I understand that I didn't post with the status of my upgrade. However, I believe mt-db2sql.cgi existed in previous versions of MoveableType, so the upgrade has nothing to do with it. I was then promptly ignored for days.

And you're asking $70 for a program that's difficult to install, more difficult to configure, and offers no support whatsoever? Writing CSS and XHTML in vi isn't pretty, but it's free and supported.

The script has changed, as the database structure has changed between versions. smile.gif So yes, if your upgrade was not successfully completed, then attempting to shift database types would not work correctly.

Expecting free and competent help from volunteers (the primary source of knowledge on these forums) without providing error messages, etc, isn't going to get you very far, no. We might be good, but we're not mind readers. Where are your threads? If you link to them, maybe someone can suggest something else?

And if you purchase a license, then you are entitled to support directly through Six Apart's help-ticket system. If you have purchased a license, then I suggest you log into your account from the main MT page and lodge a help ticket. Otherwise, you're stuck with us, unless one of the support team has time to venture in to offer support for those who have not supported SA/MT by purchasing a license.. Either way, I would suggest you read through this forum before posting again.

I'll let the topic in question speak for itself.

a better solution

Weblogs are supposed to be about the free sharing of ideas. Everyone is supposed to have a voice. Mass media matters little in the blogosphere...

Expecting that users will not mind restrictive licensing and $70 (!) for a piece of software that is meant to share ideas freely is ludicrous.

After making my previous post, I looked into Greymatter. I asked a number of questions on the support forum, essentially asking if Greymatter was right for me. The last of these questions was, spoken in jest, "Does GM suck?" The response I got (within 15 minutes) was "As the lead dev of GM at the moment, yes. There's more wrong than right." And he convinced me through his answers that GM was not right for me, and gave me a link to WordPress. Those are volunteers.

I could go on with the list of open source projects with which I have recieved large amounts of support from volunteers, but I'll spare myself the carpal tunnel.

Have fun winning over the blogosphere. I'll use my blog to inform the rest of bloggers why they shouldn't use a CMS that is difficult to install, offers no support, and costs money. Or maybe I won't have to.
