We are using MT in an educational environment with a large hierarchy of authors responsible for creating other authors. We have noticed that after deleting an author who has created other authors, the 'child' authors appear to be orphaned. They have no 'created by' and no other author, including the original/admin author is able to delete them.

I have searched for a solution to no avail. Is there something I am missing or is this an unencountered/unnoticed issue?

I would suggest using MT-Medic You cannot delete the authors from MT-Medic, but you can change the permissions to delete or modify from there. I originally used MT-Medic in my MT 2.6x installation and I found that even after upgrading to MT 3.11, it still works fine.
