It means that the entry ID should be padded to 6 digits (eg 000001 rather than 1). This is useful for permalinks.

I have been damned determined to really get a grasp on how to use MT to fit the needs of my different blogs, and have largely been met with success. I am at least beginning to understand a good bit of the code and elements! Ok, so here's my latest question: In the code snippet

what does the pad="1" part mean? Do I ever want to mess with the value in quotes? Why is it there?
