Full Version: mt-comments.cgi access restrictions

For the second time, my web hosting provider has disabled the "mt-comments.cgi" script because the high volume of comment spams I get is eating CPU usage at an unacceptable level (even with MT-Blacklist installed and forced-moderation on).

The comment spammers seem to be accessing the script directly, and NOT through the comments form I've set up on each individual entry archive page. Is there a way to modify the "mt-comments" script so that it will ONLY respond and process comments IF it was triggered from my comments form?? i.e. the script would reject any attempt to access it directly?

I may be out of my depth here, but I'm at the end of my rope in trying to solve this problem. I'm afraid that my hosting company is rapidly losing patience with me and will forbid me to use comments at all unless something is done.

A few days ago, I instituted this technique on my own site.

It hasn't been long enough for me tell if it works (I tend to get comment spam in large clumps once every few weeks), but at the very least it can't hurt.
