I am running Mac OS X which has UNIX and PERL available (I know nothing about PERL yet). I would like to be able to test the concepts locally without all the hassle of using a server, uploads, remote configuration, etc.

Well, anyway, can this be done?

Has anyone here done this?

Absolutely. My actual webserver (westfieldnetwork.com; putthisinyourmouth.com {don't ask}  ) uses mt, and is an indigo iMac in my mother's bedroom running OS X 10.1.3. Since OS X is Unix, it runs beautifully.

If it is possible, can anyone point me to a resource which explain it?

Directly, no, BUT.... I would do this. Set it up as best you can on OS X according to the MT-Install directions. When you hit a point you're not sure of, be it the first step or the 700th, feel absolutely free to mail me at johnkfisher@mac.com and I'll be happy to answer it. Pretty much anything involved in the OS X side I should be able to answer, and if it's more an mt question that I can't help you with, I've found this support forum VERY helpful indeed.

Also, do I need to learn more about PERL just to use Movable Type, if so, any recomendations about good books or other resources?

Nope. I don't know the first thing about perl, and I haven't needed to. Since I'm just home recovering from surgery doing nothing, I look forward to hearing from you to help walk you through this. Just, like I said, look over the directions first so you have the basic idea of what you're doing so that I can just fill in the tips and filepath differences and whatever apache stuff you need.

I just started research into Weblogging and before I get too far into it, I want to test it locally.

It's nice to see people as helpful as John (above). One thing I would add is that it's ironically easier to install on a remote server.

I wanted to do exactly what you do, install locally just to get a feel for it before uploading and installing it remotely. The one thing about hosts is that they're configured to host. They're pretty set up for a public, multi-user environment. I found installing it on my G4 Powerbook with OS X v10.1.3 sort of nightmarish but educational (in fact it still doesn't work right!--hence John would be more helpful in that regard). A lot depends on monkeying around with the Apache configuration file (httpd.conf). And it's a rather intimidating document.

I've no doubt that an Apache guru could do this in their sleep, but I'll vouch for trusting that MT is a truly elegant piece of work and go ahead and install it on your remote host. On the other had, using the CLI in OS X and mucking around in Apache  makes you realize what an amazing thing Apple did in adapting BSD Unix. I know gearheads who are peeing their pants with the possibilities.

Have fun.
