I agree with everything Girlie said.  A "pretty-url", at least for the categories, might be more likely to be understood.

I'd *love* to see a way for the bookmarklets to know the ping URL for a category if on a category page.  Maybe a way to tell it
CODE
<$MTEntryTrackbackData type="Category"$>
that would report a category ping URL instead of the listing of all of the individual entries on the category page.

Girlie, I do believe that Ben fixed it so spaces werne't a problem anymore - yep, its not in the main changelog, but in one of the ones from our beta testing, that is listed as being an improvement.  "Fixed bug if TrackBack ping URLs contain space at beginning or end (now strip space)."

I wonder if it would help to have something in the popup for trackback that would put the trackback URL in a form element of sorts, with a "select and copy URL" button below it that would do just that.  I've seen javascript (I think) tricks like this in the past.

Well, those are my thoughts for the moment!  I'm sure I have more that just haven't come out yet wink.gif

My problem with using Trackback is when and where do I use the bookmarklet. For the people using individual archives, you can just follow their permalinks and active the bookmarklet there. But for those of us who archive in another manner, like daily, I haven't figured out how to make it readily available.

One thought, though, it would be nice to be able to be able to manually put the trackback url into the bookmarklet rather than having to post it without it and then have to re-edit the entry.

Here's something cool, though: I was on this page (http://www.craigschamp.org/archives/2002/0...-06.html#000429) and when I activated the bookmarklet it asked me to choose which Trackback link I wanted to link to. I think Craig has done something I need to do.

p.s. I just tried again and it did work on my page. I don't know what I was doing wrong before.

I'm thinking of the users who don't/can't use bookmarklets, and also category trackbacks.

Thus, I need to communicate to visitors what the TrackBack URL is, and frankly, I just find the actual display of the URL ugly. And trying to select the text of the URL for copy and paste can be problematic (it wants to pick up an extra space at the end, which as I recall from beta-testing can cause problems with the pinging).

At first, I turned the URL into a link, thinking users could just right click and "copy shortcut". But it seems most people would just click on the link, and then get this lovely stuff in their browser window:

CODE
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1" ?>
- <response>
 <error>1</error>
 <message>Need a Source URL (url).</message>
 </response>

So, that's probably too confusing.

Any ideas of a better way??

Right, but that doesn't really help those who can't use the bookmarklet.  ???

Yay!! I must have missed that in the beta blog. Whew!

I have found some Javascript code, but everything I've found so far seems to work only in IE, or is really clunky. And with all the fuss about Javascript in the popup comments, I figured that would get old fast. Sigh.

I would like this option as well, because sometimes I may want to ping another site as well.
