Full Version: Faceted Categories?

Croma
Hi all,
anyone may help me on made a bit of light on a simple (perhaps) problem:

My web log (MT 3.15) has some simple categories, like:

Appetizer
Brunch
Condiment
Dessert
Main Course
...

if I want to add to my entries an additional category and display in my home page another "set" of categories like:

Beef
Chicken
Duck
Egg
Lamb Pasta
...

What I must do? I've taken this examples at Learning Movable Type where it list some examples of Category Customizations, naming this Faceted Categories.

Reading that page I understand that what I want is exactly that, but reading the external links Faceted Movable Type and Timothy Appnel plugin I don't understand what I need to do...

I wish to be sure if I'm talking of Faceted Categories and if there is a (simple) way to do them with Secondary Categories of MT.

Thanks! wink.gif

Hi Croma,

I think there are three approaches for what you are trying to do.

1. Hand code the links to each category into your sidebar, arranged in the order that you want. This is clumsy, but quite frankly probably the easiest path.

2. Use Pixel Charmer's faceted categories method. This is what I'm using on my recipe site. It took days to figure out and refine to get it to work properly. Now that it is set up, it works fine. Explaining how I did this however would take way too much time than I'm willing to do. So you are on your own here.

3. Use categories and subcategories, where "menu type" is a main category, and "appetizer, brunch" etc. are subcategories. I haven't been able to figure out how to get the subcategory listing code to list things out they way I want. What you probably want is to list only the subcategories, and not the category itself. Don't know how to do that, but if you do a search on this forum you may be able to turn up something.
