Hi there,
One of my blog-based sites was mentioned in big media yesterday and since then my host has twice suspended my account due to extremely heavy server loads.
I was until the suspension using static indexes and dynamic individual entry pages, but those pages where gettint too server intensive I guess and I've just made 'em static. Is that going to help?
What other steps can I take to minimize MT script loads?
(My webhost admin said it's the scripts and not the traffic, so that's how I know.)

Publishing statically should help, yes. If your site is published statically, the only activities a visitor can do to run MT scripts are commenting, sending TrackBacks, and searching.
If you're allowing TypeKey authenticated comments, visitors will run the comment script by merely viewing your Individual Archive pages, to see if they're logged into your site. That shouldn't be a lot of load, but if you have enough visitors I suppose it might add up... I would want to see some real load testing of that before recommending turning off authenticated commenting though.
