Hi Everyone,

I have been studying Movable Type (Creating Templates) for the past week and everything was going well until I couldn’t figure out how do you assign a template to a category. I tried looking in the back-end of movable type to see if I could figure out how they did it because by default you get a bunch of different layouts but to no avail. Does anyone know how I would take one of my new layouts and assign it so that the categories use it instead of the default layout?

Thanks smile.gif

There are some techniques for assigning a template to a category. You can read about it here...

Thanks for you reply. The techniques they were using I believe are far more complicated that what I need. What I would like is instead of using the default index template to display the information it would use one of mine. I do not need it to change per Category. Is there a simpler way than what they explained in those techniques or is that the way you do it.

Thanks,

If you just want to use another category template, that is one template for all categories, you simply have to modify the Category Archive Template in Movable Type.

Enter the project, select "Templates" from the navigation bar, scroll to Archive-Related Templates, click on Category Archive. The text that is given as the Template Body has to be modified.

Thank you for your help, I believe that will solve my problem. I am just curious but why can you only have one category template for all of your categories and why do they have 8 different default layouts in "Index Templates" to choose from.

p.s I didn't make my first questions the easiest to understand, it was my fault - first time ever using this software I don't know the terminology that well. Thanks for bearing with me! smile.gif

Currently Movable Type has this limitation. Maybe it will be changed somewhen.

Actually, I am not quite sure what you mean with this. Do you mean the Index Template that are to be seen in Movable Type, after you selected "Templates" from the left navigation bar? If so...

You do not choose from these 8 templates. Each of them creates a different file. One is the main page of your weblog, another is an RSS file, another one creates your stylesheet, and so on.

You might have a look at...

Movable Type Weblog - Explaining the Templates

and also at...

Movable Type Weblog - Basics

which is a 3-part introduction.
