Full Version: Upgrading Config File
Movable Type Community Forum > Installing and Upgrading > Upgrading
outskirts
background:

I have my website at livingdot.com, so they handle MT upgrades for me (which is very nice, I must say). Currently running 3.2 without a problem, upgraded from 3.0.

This current issue started when I installed MTAmazon32 and Media Manager, and began to try to sort out why I couldn't get it to work. In various places I read that I should be sure that my config file was up-to-date. For example, on a best practices page called (appropriate enough) upgrading config file this paragraph:
QUOTE
The config file (mt-config.cgi) has come a long way in the past three years and is upgraded and tweaked in nearly every release. New directives have been added, some removed and documentation inside the config file is specifically tailored to the latest version which you are now running.

Reading through that page, I find myself more confused that i was to start with. So some basic questions:

1. From this article I gather than even if my config file is out of date, 3.2 may be working for me, albeit in a diminished capacity (for example, this may be part of the reason I can't get Media Manager to work). How do I know which config file version I've got, and what it is (or isn't) doing?

2. Assume for a moment I figure out that I don't have the most recent config file, and need to upgrade. Where do I find a copy of the most recent mt-config.cgi file?

3. How do I integrate the parts of the config file I've got now (which clearly work) with the newer parts of the revised, improved, gotta have it config file? That is, is there a version of this document: configuring the system that addresses the transition from one config file to another?

4. Can I pay somebody to (a) figure all this out for me; (b) fix it; © make media manager work? Or should I just forget the whole thing and hobble down the road with my possibly outdated but up to now adequate config file. Or is there a solution that falls between these two extremes?

Regarding the link you referenced, the post was made during the early stages of MT 3.2 beta testing, and for all beta users to be sure to use the newest file. Now that it is over, the current config file downloaded from MT is the most current. And I surmise the one LivingDot used to upgrade your site is also the most current version.

Can you share how exactly you aren't able to get Media Manager to work? Are you getting any errors? If so, what are they?

Thank you for the quick reponse.

I've got MTAmazon32 and Media Manager installed (I believe) according to instructions. I also setup the plugins on the main plugin page with amazon ids, as required. But when I click on "media manager" for the weblog, I get this error page:

Can you check to see what the permissions are set to on the mmanager.cgi file? Be sure its 755. Also, can you check and reply back with the error messages being displayed in your error log of your server?

it was the permission setting for the install.cgi file -- I didn't think to check that one. Thanks for your help. Sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees. Or the other way around.

Okay, see, all of my permissions on those .cgi files are set to 755, and I've gone through every suggested fix I can find on the internets - and yet, still a premature end of script headers on any of those particular MediaManager .cgi files I attempt to access...

caroline blue - What version of Movable Type are you running? Media Manager was updated for the 3.31 release:

Hi,

I upgraded to 3.3 without reading this post (there was no reference to it in any of the documentation).

I uploaded the new files to a MT3.3 directory, copied the old mt-config.cgi file to it, and hit the mt-upgrade.cgi file. It all seemed to work right until I tried to post a comment. It came up with an error regarding a failure of the date-based archive, so I disabled archiving by date. That fixed the comments problem, but when I tried to post a new entry, again I got an error message (it is in Spanish, sorry, translation below):

Error de reconstrucción en la plantilla 'Main Index': Error en <MTEntryTrackbackData> etiqueta: Utilizó una etiqueta 'MTEntryTrackbackData' fuera del contexto de una entrada; ¿quizás la puso por error fuera de un contenedor 'MTEntries'?

---Approximate translation:

Error while rebuilding template 'Main Index': Error in tag <MTEntryTrackbackData>: you used a 'MTEntryTrackbackData' tag outside the context of an entry; maybe you placed it by mistake outside a
'MTEntries' container.

Is the problem that I copied the old mt-config file directly instead of editing it anew or is there another problem?

Many thanks for your help.

You may want to try refreshing your templates and seeing if that resolves the error.

This should not be related to mt-config.cgi at all. It's something with lib and the templates. You could also try re-uploading lib and extlib as ASCII to see if that helps.

Thanks Lisa,

it didn't work. I uploaded de tar.gz and unpacked it directly. Also uploaded those two directories separately in ascii. It is no good trying to refresh the offending templates because mt complains about rebuilding it. If I remove the TrackbackData tag, it complains about the MTEntry tag. The IndividualArchives template does not complain. Can I post my Main Index template here?

thanks
Miguel

I am sorry. I is was a silly mistake on my part, and it was right in front of me. I had forgotten to install catentries in the new plugins directory.

thanks for your help
