I was playing around with stylecatcher tonight and noticed a very dramatic difference in how templates look in IE v. Firefox on the PC (IE v 6 and FF v1.5).

In all the styles I was playing with the banner appears broken in IE and I was wondering if it is just my system which is messed up and not rendering things the way I expect them to or if it's something which is happening in geneal?

Yes I've got a paid version, but sometimes you need to hear from other users first

Hmmm ran a refresh templates to revert back to the vanilla out of the box style. Everything displays as expected in both IE and FF.

I then go to stylecatcher and apply any style (It could be one of the Vicksburg ones or either of the others) and IE decided it cannot display it properly while FF goes along without problems.

I deleted all fetched styles and refetched them through stylecatcher. Again IE decides to not want to work, while FF plays along nicely.

In other words IE will not display anything other than the default out of the box style. Not even my personal styles will do.

And trying to add the styles manually does not make any difference in IE.
lisa
With vanilla Index Templates, I'm able to apply the styles and they apply the same in IE and FF. I didn't test _all_ of them, so if you want to tell me the ones you've tested, I can test those as well.

I have tried all of them.

I am starting to think it might have something to do with one of the latest Windows updates.

Also checked Opera and they work like FF.
lisa
Oh! That's a good question. What OS are you running? I'm on XP Pro SP2.

I'm in XP Pro SP2 too.

I tried uninstalling the latest winupdates one by one while checking in between reloads and it didn't seem to make any difference at all.

Also uninstalling latest installed programs and repeatedly cleaning out temp files etc makes no diffenrence it seems.

I'm so close to just slap a notice up to IE users they really should change to another browser since I cannot guarentee what the page will look like in IE because something is broken.

Only thing left to do is to reinstall Windows, but I just did that a few months ago and don't feel like have to call and reactivate.

Well I got my main style on the site in the sig to look the same (there was only a minor diff between the two browsers) and I was able to apply that to my test blog without problems. However I still cannot get the 6A styles to work.

I am starting to think it's one of those things which won't ever be solved.
arvind
Silly question but have you tried basic solutions like emptying your cache and browsing to your actual stylesheet and seeing what IE is using?

Not silly at all, but yep that's one of the first things I tried.

My only guess now is, that something might be left after having uninstalled the .Net framwork I needed at one point. Still looking for a solution that will completely zap that thing from the system.

That stuff really shouldn't be affecting some CSS issue. What would be really helpful is a link to the blog where you've applied the styles and seeing the descrepencies. All the styles I've tried have been identical across platforms/browsers/operating systems so I wonder what the problem is.

Back again after a reinstall which didn't make a durn difference in how IE renders. One example is http://www.serialpurrs.org/testblog2/ with the wedding theme as an example. What I'm seeing is the cake graphic squished together right under the title and I don't even see the whole cake graphic.

I did manage to get one other style to render currectly, but only after having made changes to the stylesheet for that theme.

Since it seems like I'm the only one having this problem I'm more or less resigned to not trying to do anything about it, other than making sure it renders ok when I'm doing my next redesign.

I'm having problems too. My blog design was the original "vicksburg" and it showed up fine on my IE (Windows XP, IE 6). I have not downloaded any updates, my update preferences are set to manual, not automatic. Anyhoo, I was playing with the Stylecatcher, and it messed up my blog desig too. Something is wrong with every style I tried. Either the sidebar is at the bottom instead of the side, or the body is off center from the background, and some of my entries are messed up in alignments.

I get the same thing in FF, so for me, that's not it. See http://www.yarntales.com/. I changed from vicksburg to another style. This one shows the margins wonky and the misalignment in my entries. I unpublished the entries and rebuilt, but it does not help the issue in any of the styles. Also, it seems the images are broken in the Stylecatcher display, the "Saved Themes" and "Movable Type Style Library" images are broken. The links to them are: http://www.yarntales.comhttp://www.yarntales.com/mt/...etc. Other CSS-looking problems are evident, as the current theme is offset inside the display box. Have there been any changes over there? Because I've played with StyleCatcher before and it didn't do this.

How do I get the original vicksburg style back without using the stylecatcher? Do I need to upload something from the install package?
lisa
You can select that template and pick "Refresh Template" from the dropdown. That will restore your template.

Also, you should check your settings for Stylecatcher. It sounds like one of the files isn't being found. See this Knowledge Base article for more information on setting up Stylecatcher properly.

First, thanks for your help smile.gif This brought the old vicksburg back, and everything looks fine. When I use the stylecatcher to do vicksburg (or anything else), everything breaks. There are more clues, however.....

I looked around. I followed the instructions. It all looked right. I ended up resetting the settings for the plugin and reentering them, but it looked like it wasn't taking. I rebuilt, nope. (I did break things on purpose to see if it was writing to the files, and it is) I still have display problems with all the styles.

My settings in both the system overview and per weblog in Stylecatcher are as follows:

CODE
Theme Root URL:/mt/mt-static/themes
Theme Root Path: /home/myaccount/public_html/mt/mt-static/themes

...as the instructions for the plugin say to do.

I checked my error logs, and for some reason, the plugin (or something) is looking for base-weblog.css in the mt-static folder, instead of mt-static/themes. But I don't see a way to fix this in the settings. Maybe some other setting is screwing it up? huh.gif

Onto the other problem, this is what my Stylecatcher page looks like:
http://yarntales.com/scscreen.gif

After I load it and check my error logs, it says this:
CODE
/home/ytblog/public_html/mt/plugins/StyleCatcher/../../extlib/CGI.pm line 554

Also, the plugin still insists on putting my domain address twice for the location of the images on the side. When I right click and choose properties on one of the broken images, it has this for a url:

CODE
http://www.yarntales.comhttp://www.yarntales.com/mt/mt-static/plugins/StyleCatcher/images/top-

huh.gif

Does this help at all?

Thanks!
lisa
Yay! Lots of info. smile.gif

Those seem right to me. You might try putting the full URL into Theme Root URL:
http://yarntales.com/mt/mt-static/themes/

That's what you see when the URL doesn't have "/themes/" on it. sad.gif

Ok, let's try this:
1) upload StyleCatcher again
2) edit your mt-config.cgi and change StaticWebPath from
http://yarntales.com/mt/mt-static/ to
/mt/mt-static/
and let's see what happens then.

I think I've got this figured out. It's a simple annoying typo in the default style sheet that FF forgives but IE does not. Looks for this code in your style sheet:

CODE
body {
    margin: 0;
    /* setting border: 0 hoses ie5 win window inner well border */
    padding: 0;
    font-family: georgia, times new roman', serif;
    font-size: 14px;
}

Then get rid of that leftover apostrophe after the word roman. You don't need it. It's a typo.

Once that's removed, the styles load fine in IE.

Thanks,
-Lucas
