Oy, so I downloaded one of the styles from the style contest and I futzed around with it until I got it looking exactly how I wanted - and then I made the site live, STUPIDLY, because now I see it doesn't work at all on IE! The columns are the wrong size but more importantly, the images and fonts are not showing up - some do and some don't. It's very weird.

Also, I tried installing Stylecatcher, didn't work for some reason - even when I changed the permissions, etc. So instead of linking the style sheet, I pasted them together in my style template.

I have tinkered and tinkered, read all I could on this forum about this issue but as yet have no idea how to fix the problem -- but short of taking the site down "for maintenance" I don't know what to do!!!

First of all, change (reduce) the width of your central and right columns. Ie includes padding and margins in its width calculations so whatever works in FF may well be too wide for IE. Check out the box model hack in Google for fixes.

There's another problem with the permalink area. I can't find any permalink class in the css but that may be a red herring. It may have something to do with the "peekaboo" bug (try Google for that as well) but its hard to tell - the css has what looks like 3 sets of css files and the interplay between the same identifiers in one css file is going to be tricky to isolate.

Finally the height of the permalink section may have something to do with IE wanting specific heights for things, but short of rewriting the css I can't begin to pin that down any.

Hope this gives you some clues - the CSS is a bit of a mess and you may find in the long run it becomes more maintainable if you get that sorted first.
