Full Version: Mt's Ping Service Doesn't Seem To Work

We have six blogs going. And I'm anything but saavy on how pings work to get new entries listed out there. All 3 of the ping services that are listed by MT3.3 return errors whenever we post a new entry. So I went to Pingomatic and used it with the same services listed on MT plus checked others. No errors were returned. Then I copied the urls that Pingomatic shows into the "Others" section of MT. They all returned errors (obviously, non-saavy as I am, Pingomatic adds the proper format which doesn't show in the urls that they listed). So here's my question--
Is there any automated way to ping the listing services every time we post a new entry? Or do we have to do it manually each time (what a job that would be!)?
Also--since the MT documentation doesn't provide it, can anybody steer me to a simple description of the ping process and, maybe, to make the process work within the MT screen?
Thanks for your help,

What are the errors you are seeing in your Activity Log? And what are the "other" URLs you are adding?

Thanks for your help.
These are the errors from the MT built-in checkboxes:
Ping 'http://ping.blo.gs/' failed: HTTP error: 405 Method Not Allowed
Ping 'http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping' failed: HTTP error: 500 Can't connect to rpc.technorati.com:80 (connect: timeout)

These are the errors from "Other" urls we added:
Ping 'http://w.moreover.com/' failed: HTTP error: 405 Method Not Allowed
Ping 'http://w.moreover.com/' failed: HTTP error: 405 Method Not Allowed
Ping 'http://www.syndic8.com/' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found
Ping 'http://www.syndic8.com/' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found
Ping 'http://www.blogrolling.com/' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found
Ping 'http://www.blogrolling.com/' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found

Ping 'http://www.newsgator.com/home.aspx' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found
Ping 'http://www.newsgator.com/home.aspx' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found

Ping 'http://www.newsisfree.com/' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found
Ping 'http://www.newsisfree.com/' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found

Ping 'http://blogstreet.com/?' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found
Ping 'http://blogstreet.com/?' failed: HTTP error: 302 Found

Ping 'http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/home' failed:
Ping 'http://feedster.com/' failed:
Ping 'http://www.weblogs.com/' failed:
Ping 'http://blogdigger.com/index.html' failed:
Ping 'http://blo.gs/' failed:

These are urls we copied from Pingomatic as a test:
http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/home
http://feedster.com/
http://blogdigger.com/index.html
http://w.moreover.com/
http://www.newsisfree.com/
http://blo.gs/
http://www.syndic8.com/
http://www.blogrolling.com/
http://www.technorati.com/
http://www.newsgator.com/home.aspx
http://blogstreet.com/?

I realize that that these urls probably wouldn't work because we just don't know the correct protocol.

Hello Raph,

it looks like the URLs you are trying to ping are not supposed to work with this service

you have to look for those services correct XML-RPC Ping URLs

for instance feedburner has the following Ping URL:

QUOTE

as explained here: http://blogs.feedburner.com/feedburner/archives/000478.html

do a search on google to find out the XML-RPC Ping URLs for the other services you've tried to ping

Good luck,

Thanks Mihai...
I assume that all the ping section of MT is doing is providing a convenince to notify blog services. Since we only get error messages (as shown above), I suppose we could use an automatic service that does it correctly. Do you or does anyone else have any experience with Autopinger? We tested it and it seems to work fine. Any downside we should be aware of?
