I just upgraded from 3.3 to 4.0. And upon trying to access the backend, heres what I get.
Got an error: Statement has no result columns to bind (perhaps you need to successfully call execute first) at .../mt/extlib/Data/ObjectDriver/Driver/DBI.pm line 120.
Any ideas?

I get the exact same error when trying to rebuild/publish the whole site. Have no idea what it even means...

Have you checked your old plugins, some are ment to be removed. Check the upgrade page for more information.
Sometimes it is a lot better to create a new folder and do a fresh install using the same database. Íf there are plugins you need then you can just reinstall them. You will have everything there and in place so you wont loose any information.

Any further ideas? How would I access my database to look at it? I haven't the first clue.

I made a new folder on my server called mt - uploaded all the files there.
Then went to the mt.cgi page and it did it all for me. Said it made the database changes it needed to successfully.
When I go to look at the list of entries, nothing appears. But when I look at the site, it still lists them as normal, only the template's screwed up - which I expected anyway.
www.thomasjpitts.co.uk/hsx is where you need to look to see what I mean.
Recently, I tried renaming the new mt folder mt4 and rolling back to mt3.31 - which didn't work either.
I might try reinstalling an mt 3 version to help.

Aug 16 2007, 12:36 AM
Excuse a question but did you use MySQL as database in your MT 3 version? If so did you add the configuration information to your config file in the new MT 4 folder you created so that it would use the same database.
I think that DB:Berkley is not supported in MT 4 and you first need to convert it to MySQL or something like that. Check the upgrading instructions and follow the recommended way seen here

Questioning's fine - helps you to help me after all!
I use MySQL - don't have the first clue about it, it's on the server and it's worked fine up to now - and put in the login details on the screen where it asked for it. It then did some work on the database and moved on to asking for email server information (I think I'm remembering it right) I got no errors at all until I tried to use the blog!

The error seems as if it hasn´t got anything to connect to or at least not some of the blog settings. Did the install create a new blog so that the same ID that is used for your old has been created as a new blog. I am not sure but perhaps it has to do with the ID.
I am no pro on MySQL but i use phpMyAdmin to do simpler things and if you can log into your MySQL database perhaps you can see the blog ID´s.
I hopw you have a backup of your database prior to updating to MT 4. If you do I suggest you do reinstall the backup and then upgrade to 3.35 first. Check if everything works correctly and then finally upgrade to MT 4. Always backup inbetween.
Always create a new folder upgrading to "heavier" versions (with major changes as MT3.35 and MT4 is) that leaves the last working install intact including files and stuff.

All the blogs are listed when I go to Manage -> blogs, so it all seems ok. I might try a fresh install of it. See what happens then. I really appreciate your help so far. Thank you.
As for phpMyAdmin - I have it installed, but I can't get my head around how it works.

I checked your check file and it says that you do not have the config file set.
Have you changed your configfile to use mt-config.cgi and not the old file mt.cfg. Also check that you have set the correct paths for cgi and mt-static
CGIPath
http://your domain/mt4/StaticWebPath
http://your domain/mt-static My last idea today.
If you do fix this strange issue (I am sure you will but perhaps your haircolour will change to grey first

The mt-config.cgi file is there. and it all looks ok when i go into it. Everything for the database is there, and all the settings i added during the installation too.
Don't have an mt.cfg file in that instalation at all.
When I added my domain name to the CGI and static paths I get this "Got an error: Bad ObjectDriver config" so I'm going to take them back out...
I may start a new blog and import all the entries and see if that works.

I tried to rebuild the site from scratch by starting a new blog and re-adding all the entries. But I still get the same error when trying to rebuild/publish.

Final thing I noticed burried away is that you are running Perl 5.6.1 although the notes say it works, they also say the 5.8.1 is the oldest version
offically supported http://www.movabletype.com/products/mt4.html. I have also seen another post from someone running on windows that updating to 5.8.1 solved his bind issue. See

I'm getting this same error - and I am starting with a completely empty database so it should be doing the install. This same install of MT was working with a diff database, so all I did was change mt-config.cgi to point to a newly create db.
I'm confused.
If I move back to the old db, it comes up, but it won't initialize an empty one.

I'm getting this same error when I try to upgrade; I just tried to contact Six Apart support.
At this point I'm trying to evaluate moving forward to mt4.0 or getting off MT altogether and switching to WordPress, given that MT has made some major changes I'm not sure I'm happy with, and that the licensing structure no longer really fits my usage. I want to stick with MT given that I've been a satisfied users for years, but I'm not yet convinced that 4.0 is the tool I need.
So when I asked for help with the upgrade bug, I was told I have to buy support for them to answer me. This is after I've been a paying customer for years.
I found this to be a jaw-dropping lapse in corporate sense.
Let's see, I'm trying to install the tool to evaluate it; but there's a bug. So I need to PAY to get an answer on the workaround, so that I can evaluate the upgrade. But wait, this is an EVAL; so now I have to pay to eval the tool?
I am simply *appalled* at this change in six apart's support policy.
...Sorry to side track...
In any case, has anyone found anything close to a solution for this? It's a frustrating bug.

Have you reviewed all of your plugins to ensure that these are all compatible with Movable Type 4.0? You can find a (not necessarily comprehensive) list here:
http://wiki.movabletype.org/Works_with_MT4You've said that you're using an empty database (which implies a new installation), but you've also said "upgrade" - so if you've still got files around that relate to obsolete plugins, that is defintely something you should review. Try renaming the /plugins/ directory to /xplugins/ to take it out of action completely, and browse to mt.cgi (with your empty database) again. Do you see the same error?
What versions of MySQL and perl do you have? Are DBD::mysql and DBI recent versions?
This isn't a "bug" that's been widely reported, or affecting all those upgrading or installing, which suggests something about your installation/data/files is involved.

We are having the same problem, upgrading from MT 3.3 to 4.0 then 4.0.1.
We are running Perl 5.8.0, MySQL 3.23.58, DBI 1.32, BD::mysql installed 2.1021 and Apache/2.0.46.
All the templates/pages are static.
The "DBI.pm line 120" error appears when publishing, republishing or even (!!!) when browsing the paginated entries list in the Movable Type admistration area with the arrows (main page, .../mt.cgi?__mode=list_entries&blog_id=1)
We need some help with this because we can’t even publish or republish contents, although some times the individual pages or the index page is published (even if the error appears) (?)

I'll add my experience because this thread seems to have died without a good answer. I upgraded to 4.0 from a 3.3 version over the summer without any difficulties. I was able to post entries and publish with no troubles. Because I don't blog as frequently as I should, I can only say that
at an unknown time between my last entry on Sep 9th and my next attempt to blog in November, this error cropped up. After reading suggestions on this forum I disabled all plugins which did not fix the error. Now I can't even export the entries to re-import them because only the first 20 or so entries out of 180+ are exported. When I manage entries, I can view those same 20-something entries but the others give me the no columns to bind error.
To reiterate: I made no configuration changes of any sort and disabling all plugins has no affect on this error. The system info is below:

FYI, after writing my post I started searching Google again with renewed vigor. I came across a site recommending repairing the tables with overhead in phpmysqladmin. After that didn't help I noticed that both my mt.log and tbping.log showed 'in use' with dates of Oct 18 (Everything else was Dec 19). Repairing those two tables seems to have fixed my problem. I can only thank you for resurrecting the thread. My problems were solved when I exported the entries, moved servers with a fresh install, a fresh database and off I went importing the work.
But I found the same information as you using Google and couldn't solve it either - so didn't post my experience because I didn't want to create hope of a solution - though realise it would have saved you time. I apologise for that.
Not having had a huge amount of time to fully understand the ins and outs of MT4 yet, working out what was wrong was fairly difficult. But, being a teacher, I've now got more time on my hands to get to grips to it as I'm on holiday for 16 days... [don't mean to rub things in!]
Glad things are working well though now.

same error.
On an approved six apart host, wotk full time as a web developer, over four yrears exp installing.
Made a new database, new directory and upload files.
Same error.
Thankfully I use expression engine, so will continue with main site til Six Apart "gets it right"
Or at least close ennough.

Seriously, Bruce.
You have an MCSE, right?Betas have problems. By definition,
they may not work in all, and possibly many, cases. That's why they're betas. That's why you agreed to
a license that specifically said so.
You happened to hit a problem that many others have not. Stop blowing things out of proportion, or stop installing betas; your choice.

I'm using MT 4.1 final. I uploaded a fresh copy of the application, and am working with a brand new database. After importing my data (from an exported .txt file that was published with all indices), I can't rebuild without the same thing:
CODE
Statement has no result columns to bind (perhaps you need to successfully call execute first) at /home/virtual/site50/fst/var/www/cgi-bin/MT4.1/extlib/Data/ObjectDriver/Driver/DBI.pm line 119.
I've checked my database tables, made sure none of my plugins are a problem (it's the defaults set, but why take chances), and done everything else I can think of but sacrificing poultry over my keyboard.
Please tell me that someone has managed to figure out what the problem is with this is the last month....

Only one ObjectDriver.
The thing that bugs me about this is that I've installed MT before, and this is a brand new, fresh out of the box installation, with a brand new database just for the occasion.
I guess it comes down to a perception issue - sure, I could dig thru the DBI.pm file and find what it's doing on line 119, and maybe get to the root of the error, but if there's a problem with a template tag, or some of the content is causing a problem, then I guess I'd hope that I'd be able to get a "plain text" error message back out of the system. Something like "error in category tag for entry #1384", or "You messed up the template tags for your 'footer' template module."
I'm going to purge the entries I've imported and try again - hopefully it's just one of my entries with some weird encoding thing or whatever.

I'm going thru and basically republishing the whole site, one post at a time.
Two issues:
a) it sucks (and isn't the fastest possible way to do it, of course)
b) when I try to navigate to a list of entries beyond the first page - whether it's a list of 25, 50 or 200 entries at a time - I get the EXACT SAME MESSAGE:

Madness I say, sheer madness. It's like there's something in one of the title's of a post that's causing the problems. Does that seem possible? I try to stay clear of anything but straight text, but with the exception of some * or even the occasional brackets (both () and []), it's pretty vanilla stuff there.

With the exception of WP OpenID, all standard. And the WP OpenID was added after I started having the problem. I'll disable it anyway, for testing.

Sorry if I missed this, is this a clean install or an upgrade?

Squeaky clean: fresh upload and brand new db for the occasion. I then imported my data from an export.html file based on a template that was... well, I think I found it here.
A sample of exported data can be found
here.
I then copied that file from the website as it exists now and into the MT4.1 import folder and told it to import.
I manage to rebuild the last 200 entries with no problems so far - the last 150 or so via the "republish" command in the entry listing page.
Now I think I have to go in and do the other 1300+ entries one at a time.....

Ok. On one of my Google hikes I found someone had this problem and it was due to old plugin data in the database so I thought I would check.

What's the URL? Or which plugin? I'm not above starting from scratch again, but I also don't mind checking to make sure that there's not some kind of contamination in the database. I don't know how that would have happened, but the way this install is going, anything is possible.

This is the post
http://nowthis.com/log/2007/09/03.html googled Replying to No Result Columns To Bind MT
It does not mention which plug-in.

The mt_plugindata had some settings for MediaManager, but I deleted them. Still no change.
