Full Version: Movabletype 4.0 Is Extremely Slow

I did a clean install of the final release of MT 4.0, and imported my old MT 3.3x database. Everything is running fine, but the whole user interface is slow! Slow enough to be unusable. MT 4 Rc1 and Rc4 were also just as slow.

I haven't installed any plugins, and my templates are extremely basic. Even than, everything from listing entries in the MT 4 admin itself to rebuilding pages, to commenting is extremely slow.

The question is, is this fixable? Currently I want to either downgrade to Mt 3.3 - that was much faster, or shift over to some other platform.

I am running it on Site5 [http://www.site5.com/] which works fine with the other scripts installed - I have Wordpress running one blog, and also 3-4 forums, they are both lightening fast on the same server. My internet connection is a 256kbps DSL line, which while not superfast is fast enough that it is not the problem. To repeat,

Who can I contact for help on this? I am also posting this on the Site5 forums in case there are other MT 4.0 users there.

It's user interface is really slow for me too. I'm gonna try and stick it out in the hopes they patch the problem down the road.

I am also having the same problem, wish this would get fixed or there was a way to speed it up.

I can understand rebuilding taking a while, especially with complicated templates and whatnot... but why is MT 4.01 so slow to react when I click to load a weblog, or click manage entries, or click to write entry, or click to edit an existing entry? Has there been any official comment on this? Any tips to speed things up?

Count me among the seriously disgruntled. I just waited 3 minutes to post a comment, 4 minutes to log in under a different user name, and 8 minutes to post a blogpost! This is wholly unusable. If it is my setup, I would like to know. If it is MT 4.1 I want to rollback. I'm http://blog.mises.org. If you know the answer, write me at tucker@mises.org

Ditto for me - I am painted in a corner and have no idea what to doat this point - I am stuck in the middle with 3 of my blogs converted - now everything is so slow I can't do a thing

I know most don't like to hear this, but since MT runs fine for most users, the issue is likely with your server and host and that they might have overly restrictive limits on how much resources your account can use -- even to the point of killing processes that go over the limits. The solution might be to find a new host.

The next version of MT is focusing on speed issues, but what you're describing is obviously not normal behavior for the app.

I am on a managed / dedicated server that I lease from RackSpace. Nothing on it except what I put on it. It's the same server that ran 3.3 famously (and previous versions) for over a year now.

I would welcome suggestions on how to set up the server to run 4.1 better

I've said it before, but I still think this is crazy. "Software not running properly? Get a new computer."

This is not customer service, it's finger pointing. What determines "overly restrictive" limits? The fact that it might not let MT run roughshod over CPU resources? This is like making people upgrade their systems to run Windows Vista. The software should run cleanly and use as little resources as possible. It's a BLOG for crying out loud.

You're quite right This isn't customer service. But then, this isn't a customer service forum - this is the community offering some advice based on its experience.

For customer service, raise a support ticket, which anyone who has a paid-for license is entitled to do.

@jimwalczak. I think the best way forward for you would be to work with customer support to try and isolate the issue andresolve it. MT4.1 certainly has performance and resource issues, and one of the goals for the next release (first beta due out next month, I *think*), is to address these problems. However, it really shouldn't be dog slow on a dedicated server - I've got a relatively large installation of MT that I'm migrating for a client (40K entries and nearly 500K comments), and it's running perfectly well in a local virtual server (a VirtualBox VM on my laptop). Won't break any speed records, but it's doing ok. Memory seems to really help MT4 especially, but if you're on a Rackspace dedicated server you really should be ok - there's probably something else going on.

Mt4 is definitely a lot slower, irritatingly so.

One thing that will help some is to dump codepress.
disabling codepress, article on on cxliv.org, Chad's site.

Hopefully the next version will show some improvements.
