I've upgraded from 3.3 to 4.0 and it seems that MT is now generating weekly and daily archives by default and I can't see anyway to turn them off.

In the past I only had monthly date based archives being generated, what changed in MT?

Check your archive mappings in your entry listing templates. Remove the ones that you do not want.
