I don't understand this. I cannot subvert it in any way, it keeps send me here.

Is there ant reliable or reasonable documentation on this? This is a real nuisance.

This is a semi-known issue at the moment. There've been several cases, though it's unclear yet whether it was caused by MT itself during some process, a plugin or what. You should get in touch with 6A via the feedback form, as they might be able to provide some more recent information than I have.

As a start, do you happen to have direct access to your database, either via a desktop client or something like phpMyAdmin? There's a value that should be stored in the mt_config table that was completely missing in one case I've seen that appeared to have been the reason for repeated upgrade notices.

Sorry for the late reply. I'll look into it. I get them about once a week on average.

I am now getting the force upgrade from 3 to 4. I do not have the time right now to upgrade, or it would be done already.

When I log in to my MT installation, I get the
Welcome to Movable Type!

Before you can begin blogging, we need to complete your installation by initializing your database.

I click 'finish install' because I did at least back up my sites recently enough to not cause heart attack, and I get this:

Initializing database...
Upgrading table for MT::Session

* Upgrading table for MT::Session

Error during installation: Can't create table 'mt_session' (errno: 30) at lib/MT/Upgrade.pm line 1076.

I am running version 3.2. I sent mail to MT but since I am a free customer don't anticipate a quick response, so any help would be welcomed. I do have access to my db but I am EXTREMELY hesitant to touch it since I haven't tweaked db configs in about 10 years.

I am having the same problem, no solution in sight here too. I am getting them about twice a month only, though.

I am getting the force-to-upgrade screen today (mt-upgrade.cgi). I am routed there when I attempt to access the mt.cgi for ordinary login, which worked as recently as this morning. I have backed up the web server and the database, and I have also gone ahead and executed the upgrade process. The problem is that the upgrade doesn't complete the cycle. I'm already running MT4. When I select "Upgrade" I get the following error:

Error during upgrade: failed to execute statement ALTER TABLE mt_blogroll_links MODIFY blogroll_links_id integer NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY auto_increment: Multiple primary key defined at lib/MT/Upgrade.pm line 1855.

This means that I have no way to login to my installation. My blogs are effectively dead in the water until I can get this resolved. I checked with the host (icdsoft), and they said they couldn't find any reason on their end for this problem. Soooo....
Any ideas?

That's not an MT table. That was created by the Blogroll plugin, which isn't yet compatible with MT4.
If you still have it installed, I'd remove its files first. It's possibly the plugin itself that's trying for an upgrade and not the main app.

I had a similar problem some months ago with the upgrade process corrupting my access records locking me out too. It took me days to find out how exactly the database stores the access credentials before I could finally log in again.

Actually, I don't really remember. I tried to edit the data base several times and could set permissions right but MT still wouldn't let me in, so I tore everything down and reinstalled MT4 after days of fruitless trial and error, I believe.

I am still getting the upgrade message from time to time but MT4 so far hasn't corrupted my data-base again.

I just had to upgrade 3 times in one evening. It's so bad that it no longer bothers me.
