Full Version: Publishing Hangs Forever

Hi there, my first post here.

I have the following problem: I do not think I changed anything about my MT 4.01 config, but now publishing hangs forever on Category templates and Entry templates. Also, when trying to publish these templates an empty file called mt.cgi is downloaded.

Publishing only indexes and monthly archives works fine.

I am working on a Mac with OS 10.4.10, Safari 3.0.3 or Firefox 2.0.0.9. The problem is present in both browsers.

I have deactivated all plugins, the only ones remaining active are: Weblog Cloner, MT switch, Markdown and spamlookup.

Please tell me if you need any more information to help you figuring out what my problem is.

How many categories / entries do you have? Does the rebuild actually hang or is it just the browser display pausing? What happens of you press the Back button on the browser when it "stops" during a rebuild? If all the entries actually rebuild in the background then there's maybe a time out issue on the server. I recently changed from running cgi to fcgi to deal with a rebuild issue like this, especially after my ISP told me I was using nearly all the processing power of the server during rebuilds of a moderately small blog.

Where does this file get downloaded to? Server or Mac? Which folder?

My blog also falls into the "moderately small" category: I have a measly 118 entries in 16 categories. It used to take about 20 seconds for a rebuild to finish, now the striped progress-bar just goes on forever.

This mt.cgi file is downloaded to my desktop, the standard download folder of my browser. Mysterious, no?

So you are suggesting that i switch into fast-cgi mode? I'll try that.

*update* Switching into fcgi-mode doesn't seem to change anything.

*update* I just verified that publishing category and entry templates actually works. The moment the mt.cgi file is downloaded to my computer the changes take effect. It is just the publishing status window that is broken... which is also annoying.

Yes that's what I found - rebuilds continued OK but feedback stopped. I didn't see mt.cgi land in my download folder though! I can imagine that being part of a time out issue on the server (but I have a good imagination). Maybe check the server logs to see if any processes got killed, or to check resource usage?
