I'm currently running MTOS 4.1 and I'm finding it to be very slow. To rebuild 350 posts takes at least 15 minutes and even just logging in takes 6 to 10 seconds. I've searched the forums and google looking for something that might be causing this issue, but I haven't found anything. When I was using MT 4.0, performance was much better. Just navigating around Dashboard takes up to 5 seconds per link.

I've tried using FastCGI, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

There are no errors in the Apache error logs and I've trimmed out a lot of the non-used templates to speed up rebuilds, but still slow.

My site is on a VPS with 500mhz and 256mb ram. The VPS is not exceeding memory usage (idle is about 30-40% usage). Centos 4 (Webstack) with Apache 2.0.59, MySQL 5.027, Perl 5.8.8, PHP 5.1.6.

Edit: I have disabled all spam filtering except "Comment Challenge" which seems to keep almost all spam at bay. I don't ping any web services from MT.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Darcy

Note: I have full access to the VPS so modifying the system isn't an issue.

Are you using any custom templates, lots of tags or categories?

I'm using a custom CSS template. Not a lot of categories (date and category only templates only) and an average number of tags. I just used the tags from the standard template and put them in my custom template.

The template I use now worked fine under MT 4.0. I noticed 4.01 was slower and then 4.1 became really slow.

For login speed try removing the dashboard widget as it has to collect data to update the display.

Are you building weekly archives, this is know to be a problem at the moment, http://www.movabletype.org/documentation/a...ease-notes.html

I am also finding that 4.1 is extremely slow to navigate.

Has anyone discovered a reason or a fix for this behaviour. MT 4.1 is a clean install and I haven't had a chance to do any real customizing or adding slow complications as it just take too long to navigate the CMS.

Any feedback would be great!
Thanks!

This whole MT situation is pretty awful since the move to 4.01. I've been with MT since 2.67 I believe. I'm currently running 4.1 and I absolutely detest it. Up until the move to 4, I was really happy with MT.

4.01 and 4.1 are slow. SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWWW. I upgraded my setup to fastCGI and saw little difference. 4.01 and 4.1 are also riddled with errors. 4.1, in particular, gives me tons of 500 server errors, but I believe that's due to the system timing out since the [expletive] thing is so [expletive] slow.

The MT4 platform is a huge step down from MT3 because it added tons of bloat while damaging the basic usability of MT itself. MT4 sure is pretty, but I'll trade pretty for functional any day. Upgrading to 4.01 and then again to 4.1 was quite easy and painless. Living with 4.01 and then 4.1 has been absolutely terrible.

I remember the good old days of 2.66 - Although I'm not quite ready to go back to this stage I am looking at alternative tools as it doesn't look like the situation is going to get any better.
