I've got an old blog built on MT 3.16, which was formerly very active. For various reasons I won't get into, it has unfortunately fallen by the wayside for the past year and a half or so and I haven't been able to upkeep it. I'm now looking to bring it back to life, and of course an upgrade is in order. There is a pretty large database of posts there which I'm planning to export and re-import into a new MT install.

The problem I'm looking at is about 60,000+ spammed comments that I haven't been cleaning (before, I approved real comments and de-spammed/deleted the bad ones). The buildup is admittedly from my own lack of care for the blog. Now, MT-Blacklist is throwing me an error, and I don't see a good way of deleting everything.

I'd actually be fine with deleting ALL comments made after a certain date - is there any way to do that? Or would there be a good way to clean them during/after an MT upgrade?

I had a simular problem with spam comments. I exported the blog, opened the text file and manually deleted all the comments. Then I deleted all the content on the board, and did the import with the cleaned mt.txt. It was cumbersome and took a long time, but it worked.
