Full Version: Strategy For Upgrading And Changing Hosts
Movable Type Community Forum > Installing and Upgrading > Importing and Exporting

I have several blogs running nicely on my present web host, with Movable Type 3.3. I am preparing to shift my website to a new web host. I have installed Movable Type 4.1 on the new host, and verified that it is working. I'm using mySQL on both servers.

What's the best way to transfer the data to the new server?

Do I need to upgrade to MT 4 on the old server before I copy the database contents?

[I looked for documentation on this question, without success. If there is already a guide available, I'd appreciate a pointer to it.]

I'm not sure it matters whether you upgrade before or after the move as long as you're sure the DNS has propagated and all.

I'd probably upload the 4.1 files, upload the database, run the install process and it will upgrade the database automatically at your new host.

You could probably also, since you've already installed 4.1, upload your database and change the database info in mt-config.cgi to point to this new imported one -- which it will then upgrade.

As always, backup everything and don't delete the old stuff until you're sure the new install has "taken."
