Full Version: How To Create A Backup?
Movable Type Community Forum > Installing and Upgrading > Upgrading

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade from version 3.3.1 to the latest version 4.xx and I want to create a backup first. This is going to sound crazy--I've searched this forum and apparently no one else has had this problem--but I can't find the "tools" menu with the backup option. I've read the manual, and it just says

"To back up the contents of your blog, switch to the System Overview area of Movable Type by choosing "System Overview" from the main blog selection menu. Then choose Tools > Backup from the main menu. This will display the backup screen."

I'm on the System Overview screen, and I don't have a menu that has "Tools" in it. Where is it?

You're reading the version 4 docs. That's a v4 feature. (Remember you're three releases behind right now.)

To create backup of a 3.x installation, you should just output a dump of your database using something like phpMyAdmin, which your host probably has available to you. You can contact their support department or check their knowledge base. Version 3 and prior did offer the export function, but it didn't output some information(like basenames) which may be undesirable. The database dump will have absolutely everything.

Thanks for the response. It turns out my web host creates backups every morning. I just had to download one. Who knew?

Thanks for your response. I'll try it. One more good reason to update...
