I'm currently running Movable Type Open Source 4.12. I've tried upgrading to MTOS 4.2 and experienced the following.
1. I made a backup of my MTOS directory structure as well as MySQL database.
2. I uploaded the MTOS 4.2 structure over my existing MT structure.
3. I accessed my blog and was notified that there was an upgrade.
4. The upgrade began and the progress indicator appeared.
I let the system "upgrade" for about 30 minutes and did not received any errors or any messages on the screen. I closed my web browser and began the process again with the same results.
I could not locate any upgrade log file created by the process and as I've never experienced this with an MT upgrade before, I do not know where to start the troubleshooting.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you see any JavaScript errors on the page?

Thanks for the reply.
I restored my old directory structure so I could use the system, so I'm not 100% sure, but I believe there was a javascript error in IE. I unfortunately don't have a screen shot or recall the file/line number.
Is there something you would recommend checking?

If IE was showing a JavaScript error that would explain the stalled upgrade.
It means that not all the files were correctly uploaded / overwritten so that JavaScript files are corrupt.

Thanks for the info. I'll download the 4.2 package again, upload the package to my site, and try the upgrade again.
I'll post results when I'm done.
Thanks!
