I have sucessfully upgraded (i thought) from 4.1 to 4.23, until I tried to publish when I get the following error message.

Publish error in template 'Archive Index':
Error in <mtIfArchiveTypeEnabled> tag:
Error in <mtArchiveList> tag:
Error in <mtArchiveDate> tag:

You used an MTArchiveDate tag without a date context set up.

Background -- I use all of the default templates with zero modifications. In the setup screen I have "entry" selected as the archive type. I have modifed my "styles" for the site, perhaps this is where there is a problem with 4.23.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I am unable to post a new entry or indexes, but I can post all archives individually (month, category, entry, author, page).

It sounds like the error is in the Archive Index template. You may not have changed your templates much, but they've certainly been modified from the default. Can you post your Archive Index template?

The error message you're mentioning is usually displayed when you don't have a "date based" archive active

You may like to look if the 'Date Based' template is set to publish

If you've recoded your web site templates based on mt v4.x templating system, you should look on the Entry Listing archiving template and see if monthly, weekly or daily archives are activated...

Also helpful if you list here your 'Archive Index' template or if you send it over via PM
