I would like to see MT offering a larger range of CSS Templates, as I spent over a day changing one from the site to get the page looking the way I wished, amd as I am fairly new to this it was quite tricky. All the CSS templates are quite similar and it would be nice to see some different ones, maybe offer a chance for users of MT to submit their own templates to be used?

Also, the availability of different layouts for a weblog would be good, I am just starting to get my head around this whole weblog thing, would like a slightly different layout for some of the pages, but wouldn't know where to start, so offering the chance of different layouts would be good

This would be great.  Have some sort of submission contest and include them in the next release of have a ziped pack of styles.

An alternative would be to have us all contribute templates to a central location, similar to the Blogger template gallery.

I agree with the central location part. That would be a great way for people to submit template styles. And it would help those not so html-savy to get up and running with something other than the default ones that you can get at MT's site.

Anyone want to volunteer to run a site like this?

I do have some styles available at blogstyles, and I might be open to having some user submitted styles posted there...

Ideally, the central location would be here somewhere. With Blogger, choosing a template from the (huge) gallery is part of the setup process. You don't have to go hunting for it. If Kristine hadn't posted the link to Blogstyles, I never would have found it.

if you're looking for a huge repository of user submitted blog templates, try blogskins.com.   there are tons of them there, and they've got both blogger and movabletype versions of their templates. the only problem i have with their site is that browsing the templates is a lot slower than it needs to be, due to very poorly thought out design of their overall website.

but i agree, mt needs to offer some new looks, or update the ones they have now. i think the assumption is that all mt users are html powergeeks and will customize the templates anyway, so not a lot of time was put into the default set. but that isnt very helpful for beginners.
